Crate Training WONDER!

As some of you may know, for the past week or so since I've had Freddy I've slept with him on the sofa to help him settle in. He naps during the day in his crate without a problem, and if he whines we ignore it (obviously if he needs a wee or food, we don't!) and he settles himself.
Well last night he slept the whole night through on the sofa with me without waking up, so I decided tonight would be a good night to move him to his crate for the night. He went down at about 8ish, and it's now midnight and he hasn't woken up or whined. He wakes up now and then but I'm here and he goes straight back to sleep. He just looked up at me (even dogs get pillow cheek) and went back to sleep! Such an easy transition! I'm so proud of him! So I just wanted to update because I'm delighted that this crate at night thing went off without a hitch! He's perfectly happy in there! Sorry for yet more Freddy-oriented posts! Thanks for reading!

Yay Freddy! So glad to hear he's doing so well with you. Crate training wasn't so easy with my Lily, so it's nice to hear a good crate training story!

Haha, oh you make me laugh. I failed crate training with Lucy not miserably but happily. She has slept in the bedroom with us since day one. I did crate her when no one was home but that's not much. Then again I failed keeping my kids in their cribs when they were babies too. They slept in bed with us too until they were a little older than infants. Seriously, people worry about it too much. Lucy turned out wonderful and my kids as wonderful as kids can be LOL.

I would GLADLY have him sleep in my bed, but my mama won't allow it.

I do understand the reasoning behind that though. Lucy slept in her own bed in our bedroom.

She won't even allow that. Says he's not allowed upstairs.

My husband also doesn't want our puppy upstairs! We will see how long that lasts! He works night shifts and I think the howler is going to win this little battle - but I am playing along for now on night duty. (My have to install camera to catch the footage of him violating his own "no upstairs" rule!).

Crate, Doggy Bed, or OUR beds?

Hello. I'm new to this forum, but hoping for some suggestions. My family have rescued a Jack Russell Terrier from the shelter a week ago. Prince Willoughby is approximately 5 yoa, male, and thus far, a good match for us. My question is, should I continue letting our dog sleep with us in our beds or crate him during sleep hours? He seems to have been house trained before, as we haven't had any accidents, nor has Willoughby expressed any unruly behaviors. My fear is that we'd be providing him a disservice, when it comes to separation anxieties when we leave for work/school. He's not a fan of the crate, as we do crate him when we leave the house. He doesn't go in on his own and has already associated the crate to mean that we're leaving. We bought him a bed, but that's not working out at all. Willoughby prefers being under my bed if that's the case. So, what to do? I'll take all the suggestions I can get. Thanks.
