My family and I just brought are first puppy home today. Daisy is six weeks old and has fleas. I need advice on what to do for her. Should we take her to the vet? Thank You in advance for helping.

With a pup that young I would get her to the vet ASAP. It dosn't take a severe infestation to create anemia in a pup, plus she should be checked out, vaccinated, and put on perscription flea and tick preventative. Don't wait, fleas are dangerious for a pup so young, and once fleas are established in the house they are very hard to eleminate. Good luck and let us know how she's doing.

I would definitely get a veterinarian's opinion because any over the counter product you buy is going to have a warning not to use on puppies under 12 weeks of age.

I believe Advantage is safe for puppies. Just buy the proper weight formula.

Yes take your new pup for a visit to the vet to get the ball rolling. Also there is a product I think called Adams or de flea shampoo thats gentle enough for even four week old kittens(I've used it before and it does really work and they were overrun with fleas), and is okay for puppies of any size too. Good luck with your new pup! :p

Take the pup to a vet. Fleas can cause anemia
Advantage can not be used until the pup I believe is at least 7 weeks old

Thanks for all the replys. I called a vet today and the vet told me that they couldn't do anything for her till she was 7 weeks old. They told me to use baby shampoo and a flea comb and do what I can to get them out. Of course that isn't helping. The fleas are not really bad but still she is so young and I am worried about it. I am really lost here. I am not sure what else to do for her. I also asked about her puppy shots and they said at 7 weeks I could get her puppy shots. Is that right?
Thanks

Daisymay,
I have not used flea shampoos or sprays for 20 years, I treat the yard and bath my dogs with a mild shampoo. I do not have a problem with fleas. Follow the vets advice in regards to the comb and shampoo, if you have a problem outside treat your yard. Yes your puppy can and should be vaccinated now.

I am sure my owrds will end up bitting me back. Yesterday brought my dogs home from a big romp at my mothers and they were outdoors in a highly wooded area. Of course my dogs are over due for the next frontline that we use on them and when I got them home I checked them out. Ok found one flea on RIo. Right to the bathroom we went. I flled the tub up all th eway then bathed them and then drained the water and re rinsed them. Rio was good . I did Nicky and found 5 on him- 3 before bathing then actually two more so hence we went back to skinny dip again. Now the dogs had been in the house for only and hour but I riped apart their dog bed and my bed which of course they had jumped on when they got home. I might say I had 2 really pissed off dogs but been combing them all day today and they seem ok. Was reading you have to keep vaccuming and vaccuming and throw the vaccume bags out otherwise fleas come out of the vaccum. Hence found a store open and bought a ten pack and plan on going back. If I see one bug I flip I had seen 5 last night then read a flea lays and egg an hour. They say vaccum all furniture and dont think buy closing a room off for a few days stops the eggs from hatching they hatch from what I read when I guess fresh meat us or our pets come back into that area. So Vaccum you heart out and dumb those bags. They said Joy dish detergent was good for getting rid of fleas so I am wiping my floors and everything down. I am trying my hardest to prevent a flea infestation even though I hope I got them. Tomorrow they wil have their new frontline on them we only get it at the vet since we have heard some places sometimes sell knock off. I dont know if thats true so I trust my vet. This is how I am handling fleas. When you dog gets older dont forget to get their flea treatment on them in time cause you will end up doing what I am. I am like a week late. I feel like a rotten Mommy since we are all now dealing with this. I'll let you know how it goes. I am also getting the dogs groomed this week and when they are out will do the whole house over and over again. Im not good with any types of bugs. Go figure I used to go camping all the time;) Let me know how it goes.

Well wondering how the Flea sistuaion has gone. We were able to get ours under control (knock wood). WE make sure we vacume daily and I mean we do everything furniture and all. Also had the dogs grromed so hair is real short and havent seen a bugger in a while. Hope all your fleas are gone.
