like me?:D
I would love to talk w/ others about this great breed.
My pup is about 8 months old now and I've had him since he was 8 weeks.

He is one smart and happy pup.

Check out his gallery.

I'm taking care of my parent's cockapoo while they're on a cruise, does that count? Her name is Flicka and she's about 6 yrs old. She's a little put out because she has to share our house with our dogs... and she is most certainly not a dog (spoiled much? :p )! She's a sweetie, though, and seems to shadow me everywhere. I try to give her some quality time in our bedroom where she can climb on our bed and chill with us, she loves that!

Here's a picture of Flicka as I type this, trying to be near me on my husband's computer chair (bummer for her when he gets home and wants to get on his computer).

She's a cutie, looks a whole lot like Boots. They are very sweet dogs.

BTW, I love your website and pictures. I live louisville, KY just 10 minutes from Churchill Downs. :)

I've never owned a Cockapoo myself,. but one of my uncles had one back in the 1970s. One of the best dogs I've known. Wonderful companion, easy to housebreak, and he adored children. As I recall, he didn't shed either.

His favorite trick when he was young was taking a flying leap and jumping into a person's arms about chest high. You had to be prepared when you called him. Good thing he only weighed about 20 pounds.

i am looking for a cockapoo and i was wondering, are they energetic, for example i had a shih tzu and whenever i would knock on door or try to open it or in that case anyone try to open the door or ring bell, my shih tzu would run and jump all over the door. i like this characteristic of my dog. does the cockapoo have the same? and also, are they active and playful? or are they lap dogs?

Again...why breed mutts? They are not a breed they are nothing but a mix.

I agree with Smooth and while I understand this is a " discuss dog" forum and we love and welcome dogs of all races (smile), I don't understand why someone is going to purposely go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a "designer" dog, that is essentially a mutt? Could someone please explain? Perferably someone who has a desginer dog... The amount of money that you spend on this designer ( mutt) dog, you could have spent on a full blooded dog of either of breeds.

Rott- We got my dh's grandma a puggle but it was and ohio rescue. we wanted a full pug but felt bad for the poor guy. We love him. But he is one of the most hyper annoying dogs i have ever met. He doesn't listen for S$#t! But half the problem is that he is very spoiled.

Rott.
It is fairly simple. The name explains it. DESIGNER. As for the cockapoo it was "created" to minimize the health issues of the cocker. The addition of the poodle is said to make a nicer, more healthy dog. Something that is not readily available. BTW, Many are priced less than a quality purebred. I see them in the papers for $300-700. A quality purebred is that or more. The Doodles are ridiculous, but i can't speak on those as I have not looked into them. They suffer from the "no two look alike" syndrome if you ask me tho. The Cockapoo are said to be healthier than either parent breed, the personalities are said to be a combination of the good in each breed, and so on. I had an indepth conversation with a client on this topic. Another client has a Shipoo. She was furious that the fan was cut in front of the eyes on her dog. "Aren't groomers supposed to know how to cut the breeds they groom, that is a signature look for the Shih tzu...???" I did not do it, but the previous owner had. She said she chose a designer dog...
1. To have something unique, yet common
2. The breeder said the health was better as the genes are crossed weeding out some problems.
3. She liked both breeds but not enough to get one. The cross was "perfect"
4. Hopefully this will be a new breed.
5. She saw one.

That said, I think many breeds were carefully/thoughtfully created weren't they? Not just this and that to get a thisat. People some where dabbled in the genetics to get what they wanted. Hunting, herding...
There was a horrid thread over the Cavachon on a different msg board. These are my feelings... There is no continuity in designer dogs. No two look alike. Breed standard??? The pups could be SERIOUSLY compromised by this "selective" breeding. What is going to happen when you breed a long backed, short legged dog with a square dog? A shedding dog with a hypo dog. They tend to say it is still hypo.. Hello?? I am soooo into structure. I really dislike the mixing of breeds to achieve something cute and new. I really don't think we need to create anymore companion dogs. Structure is so important to the well being of a dog. I see dogs that can't stand still on the table on a daily basis. It is NOT from a poorly trained dog. It is structure. The dog is not put together to stand still like a well built dog is. This really eats me up. I could go on and on, but I won't.

The Cockapoo are said to be healthier than either parent breed, the personalities are said to be a combination of the good in each breed, and so on.

How can this be if you are breeding two dogs together who have health issues? That statement contradicts what ethnic breeders say about getting dogs health tested and all and passing before considering their dogs to be breed.

Cookapoo's have been around forever. IF they were such a great dog i would assume that someone would have stepped in and starting the process to try to make them a real breed. But no. most of them are just people randomly throwing the two breeds together and of course they are not the top of either breed because those people would never do that. So you are getting a mutt made from two pet quality at best dogs.

All in all. The reasons that were listed are what pet stores tell stupid people.

You can't feed me bull**** and call it chocolate pudding.

One time I was looking through the classified ads of the Sunday Paper and there was an ad that said

"5 Year old Labradoodle! AKC registered champion! only $1300!!"

I wonder who fell for it....

If I am misconstruing this sorry in advance. Seems like parts of my post are being taken out of context.
This is why I guess I should have left well enough alone... It was asked of an owner, which I am not. My mistake.
I said it was a conversation I had and what they were told by the breeders. OK? I do not believe much if any of it...
Doodles. They are outrageously priced.
I was NOT trying to feed BS, nor did I say I bought it, fed it, or anything. I did say I am AGAINST IT!!! Health/structure/coat type...against it all. I find it potentially dangerous.
I did hear that the cockapoo is a recognised breed with CKC or something, complete with a breed standard.
Again, if it is not directed at me, sorry. Just felt that way...

The CKC will recognize ANY breed. They actually allow registration on cross breed dogs to ''encourage the production of new breeds''. This is the continental kennel club, not canadian. They don't hold shows, don't create breed standards, and don't do any good for dogs. They're strictly there to provide a registry for millers and byb's to get papers on their mutts so they can sell them for more.

Out of respect for the OP, lets continue this thread for cockapoo owners/admirers.

If you want to discuss the ethics of this particular mix of dogs or any of the "designer" breeds, then please start a new thread.

With all due respect, I welcome all dogs to this forum BUT I do not condone the breeding of Designer Dogs, which is what you are asking us to answer. With that said, that is probably why you aren't getting a answer from anybody. I'm not answering it... Good Luck..

Maybe if you start your own thread, you will get better results. And try being more specific.
There can be lap dogs who are very energetic dogs.

Um really I would guess it would depend on the individual dog. About a month ago we got a Cockapoo in the Humane Society and she was really calm. She was content to just sleep in your lap. But there could be active ones too! Lol good luck in your search and in finding a reputable breeder (or rescue one)!!! :D
