View Full Version : Teeth
I have seen some people actually brush their dogs teeth. Is this too much? What do people do for dental health?

I brush my dogs teeth. When I got Nicky who was 3 years old a few months ago he never chewed on bone and rarely ate milk bone so his teeth actually were black and his gums were horrible. So now we brush his teeth with a regular tooth brush and water. Oh I also had his teeth cleaned by the dentist with lazer when he was being nuetered. Once his teeth were fixed he started chewing bones and playing with toys something he never did. Just like us dogs get periodontal disease. Nickys teeth are beautiful now.!

I brush Jacks. It helps with the 'mouser breath'. Also, since doggie toothpaste is in flavors like chicken, peanut butter, etc. She likes it and sits nicely.

My dogs get RB's (recreational bones-like femur bones) on a weekly basis and RMB's (raw meaty bones) are a daily part of their diet.
Their teeth and gums are in excellent condition and they never have doggie breath.
I brush my girl's. have been for a while. TRUST me, if you've had to deal with animals whose teeth weren't properly taken care of, you'd be brushing your dogs.
Also, just to let you know, when your dog goes in for a "Dental", sedation needs to be administered. Brush his/her teeth, especially if they eat a lot of soft food. (JMO)
How about Greenies? Do they count?

Hey girl
After I read of a dog dying on Greenies=which, btw, dogs cannot break down, I stopped giving them to Venus. Basically, they "come apart" in pieces, sometimes large ones, and go into your dogs system, as such, therefore, sometimes causing obstructions, and such. No more for me. And since dogs are gulpers, as opposed to chewers, imo, I can't see how they would aid in benefiting your dogs' teeth.
I'll see if I can relocate that story, and post it. It was a few months ago. I'll hunt...

My Gus, who is almost 14, had to have teeth removed because I did NOT brush her teeth. She likes milk bones, but never chewed on anything else. The vet said serious periodental disease is more common with little ones like her.
She will NOT let me do it now, she is too set in her ways, she acts like we are torturing her, you literally need 3 people, one to hold her, one to pry her mouth open and one to brush. The vet said to just catch her mouth open and daub on some doggy toothpaste...better than nothing.
