I have Toy Fox Terriers (those are my kids in the avatar). What are you looking for as far as coat maintainance, activity level, etc. If by easy to get along with you mean does not require attention, a misconception among many people is that small dogs don't need work like big dogs. I can tell you my TFT's require more excercise than the Bouvier I used to have! Though I can excercise them indoors by playing fetch. My 9 year old male walks four miles a day with me and would go further if I could! There are breeds with laid back temperments in all sizes and active breeds in all sizes. I think the best thing to do is to find several breeds with the look and size that appeals to you and then do indepth research on those breeds to match temperment to you and your lifestyle. Groomers and trainers can be invaluable in this final step as they have hands on experience with a variety of breeds and, unless you happened to pick their breed, will give you an unbiased opinion.
