Does anyone know much about sun poisoning in dogs? My beautiful tobey goes out frequently for hours sometimes lounging in the sun, and his once black nose is slowly turning pink. I couldn't find much about it in a search on google, and I came up with sunburn and using sunscreen on them(bet he'd love that), but it said on the bridge of the nose and ears, nothing about the actual bare nose. My good friend said her sisters dog started developing the same sort of thing. The dogs black nose turned a dark pink and splotchy and they took him to a specialist who tatood his nose(?). I thought that sounded crazy, but now I'm wondering and worrying a bit... Tobey is two, and I asked the vet about it, but she didn't say to be concerned. I've always heard that as a hairless spot, their nose is sensitive to sun and all, but should I be limiting his exposure during peak hours or what? I'd like any more info anyone has about it pertaining to dogs.

I'll put sunblock on Lukes nose if he's going to be in the sun for a long time. I never heard of tatooing a dogs nose. I bet that would hurt. Did they have to put him under to do that? I know Luke wouldn't sit still for that evolution.

google "Snow Nose" and you'll find information on this, and also "Plastic Dish Dermatitis", an allergic reation to antioxidants found in plastic food and water dishes. i'm not saying that this is what it is, just that these are good areas to start researching your dog's problem.

i've heard of people tattooing their dogs noses, but it was my understanding that it's mostly people who show their dogs, as Snow Nose would disqualify their dog.

Rio's Nose had started changing when I had pulled out a plastic bowl I had bought at a dollar store for the yard. After a few weeks I noticed his nose changing. Didnt know what is was but after talking with the vet seemed it was the plastic bowl. Now I only use ceramic bowls.
Also sunscreen on the nose when outside. Doggles has dog sunscreen.
