I cannot remember the clinical name for this but I will describe it. Lucy's left lower eyelid has a section of eyelashes that grow into her pupil, causing significant irritation as well as the likelihood of future problems (such as cataracts). She goes for a pre-surgical consultation middle of next week that will inform me of the exact surgery date, what it will involve and any risks associated with it.

It is like her left bottom eyelid is the opposite of a St. Bernard's droopy eye. Her eyelashes were first plucked (yes ouch) to see if they would grow in naturally but now it is thought to be the eyelid formation itself. If you look closely in her pictures, such as my avator, you can see her left eye always appears somewhat smaller because she squints that eye. I was told to wash her eye out twice daily until the surgery which I am hoping will be scheduled to occur by the end of this month.

Has anyone had this type of surgery done to their dog? I would love to hear from anyone else who has already dealt with this, including if there were ever any future problems even after corrective surgery.

Well, Lucy never had actual surgery at that point, just was given drops and told to come back in a few months.
It's called an Entropion and she has the real surgery next Thursday, Nov. 9. Just had a follow-up exam earlier today in regards to this. Vet says she is mature enough now to have it done. She will have stitches for 2 weeks and have to wear one of the elizabethan collars until the stitches come out, also said initially her face will swell and look awful.
What scared me is that there is already scar tissue that the vet seemed surprised to see and he showed it to me, used this green goop and a light. I was orginally told to wait until she was closer to a year old by him but when he saw the scar tissue, he said to have it done asap, thus it was scheduled for next week.

He said that eye may always be a little on the droopy side but she shouldn;t have any other problems from it.

It's kind of scary what my vet bill is going to be next week... Holly gets spayed and microchipped on Wed and then Lucy gets her eye surgery Thurs... and I'm thinking of all those people who say owning a dog isn't expensive. If only they could see my quoted bill. Yikes, lol.

Ya those dang eye lashes. I have had a few that had to have that done. I'm sure she will be fine though.

The vet said its mostly a heriditary condition. Is that what you were told?
How long did it take for the eye to totally heal?

My parents had a chow ho had that surgery done and it went fine. I don't remember the recovery time it was quite awhile ago. Hope all goes well

I wasn't told it was heriditary and i have seen quite a few of them and never did a vet say that when i was there. It's just an eye normality. And the dogs that i have had that had it were not closely related.

I would say it took about 4 weeks for it to heal and look normal but it really depends on the dog. Collies have tiny eyes so it's really hard to do to begin with and one of them they shaved by it. it's not big deal. Iknow that's hard to hear but recover is really not bad as long as she doesn't mind you putting ointment in it and things like that
