Very intelligent 2 yo German Shepherd needs (make that found) home! (CA desert area)
(I can't seem to delete this, only edit it, so here's here's how the story went)
Casey is a fun-loving, playful purebred German Shepherd who needs plenty of attention. She comes from a breeder whose dogs are often used as bomb and police dogs, so her working intstincts are very strong; therefore, she needs to be active, she loves to learn and she is very intelligent. She grew up with another dog in the home and they were great friends, but she can be aggressive towards strange dogs. She is friendly with all people, but is strong and likes to jump, so she wouldn't do well in a home with small children. My husband and I were unable to keep her because we were transferred to the city and moved into a condo, and Casey needed more space. I flew with her to CA so she could live with my dad, but he is gone about 12 hours a day, and she is not happy alone so long (she is currently with him in Joshua Tree, CA). Casey would make a wonderful dog for someone who has the time to give her and really wants her to be a part of their lives, say doing agility activities with her, going jogging and/or doing anything else that uses her mind. Please help us find a home for her! She was SO not doing well here in Chicago city-life, and we don't want to have to bring her all the way back from California to a place where she has to be stuck in her crate all day long! Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Last edited by reverie95; 06-29-2006 at 10:37 PM. |

It can be difficult placing a dog with her personality. I owned a GSD who was very similar to how you describe yours, and she definitely was not the dog for just anyone.
Why not hire a dog walker during the 12 hour period instead of leaving her crated that entire time? Is she destructive...is this why she has to be crated? I think it is usually best to leave a dog in its current place and instead find ways to alleviate the problem. Your dad and her would both love going through obedience classes and then you can move on to agility. GSDs are very good at such activities!

She is currently running free from inside/outside at my dad's for the 12 hours he's gone, but, yes, she's gotten to chewing things, plus he just feels bad for leaving her so long and he really just needs a calmer dog if he's going to have one. He doesn't have the time to take her to classes, though he takes for for both walks and jogs. He just can't keep her any longer, so it's either a new home, or she's back with us in the condo. The reason she was crated there (though never for 12 hours at a time!) was because she and our other dog, who is also very rambunctious, just couldn't be trusted together (they would distract each other and have accidents), plus she just wasn't doing well running into all the other dogs in the condo elevators/dog run. She's just not a Chicago condo dog--no one was happy in that situation, but that's what it'll be back to if we can't find a place for her soon. She's a great dog, but just not for us, unfortunately.

It sounds as if you have already made your decision. I hope you will continue to keep her until the right home is found though, as it sounds like she requires a more experienced dog owner than what the average citizen can offer. If you take her to a shelter, her behaviors will probably only worsen.
Have you placed ads in your local papers? Then screen, screen, screen.

Is she a black and tan? I am in Sacramento and have been passively looking for a german shepherd. Can you post a pic? Her current behaviors won't be any problems.

She is black and tan, but maybe more of what they call the bi-color? I posted some pictures of her in my gallery--they were taken a while back, but I think they're a pretty good representation of her. She's a very bright, inquisitive dog, and quite high-spirited, as I've mentioned. If you'd like to know more about her, I can give a bunch more details (i.e. she's spayed, has been through basic obedience...). Thanks for asking about her!
