We have a six-year-old female Akita my husband got as a puppy. She is a very obedient, loyal and loving dog, but has recently started showing aggression towards our other animals. We have tried everything in our power to stop this behaviour, but to no avail. Because we have a small child in the house, we feel it is best to find our dog a loving home. She has never shown aggression towards people, but we cannot take the chance with our daughter. This is one of the hardest decisions we have had to make, but feel it is for the best. Which leads me to this posting. We are looking for someone to adopt our Gracie - someone without other animals and preferably no small children. Someone who knows about the Akita breed and what to expect. Gracie is fully house-trained, knows several tricks and is primarily an inside dog. She is heartworm negative and on a heartworm and flea preventative. She is mellow and just likes relaxing around the house, but is always up for walks and playing with toys. She would be a great companion for an older person wanting to love a dog and not interested in the whole puppy thing. We truly want to find her a loving home. If anyone knows of anyone interested in her, please contact us.
We have been told about pet therapists and other who may be able to help us, but at this stage, we can't take the risk of keeping her in the home with our other pets and child. She has been around our other dog 4 years, and two months ago, attacked her. We were told by the vet that it was most likely in response to the new male dog introduced to our house, and that the best course of action would be to let them figure out the dominance issue on their own. We tried that, but she has had another incident with the dog. The other dog is a Pug, so it's not even fair to take the chance she will do it again. You're talking about a 40 lb weight difference.
The latest episode involved the family cat, with whom she has lived 5 years. The cat ended up dying as a result, which was the last straw. I absolutely cannot risk her turning on our two year old daughter. For the time being, she is in a separate area of the house from the other dog as well as my daughter. She is still being adequately cared for and loved, but that's no way to have to live - separate from the rest of the family.
I realize that most people on here already have dogs, but I also realize that most people on here are dog lovers. And dog lovers have to have friends, right? So maybe someone knows someone who doesn't yet have a dog, and is looking for the perfect companion who is already trained.
We are desperate here - the last thing we want to do is take Gracie to the animal shelter or have her put to sleep, but something has to give. We have called several rescue groups, with no luck. Everyone either has no foster homes, or is not accepting any new dogs at this time. We live in the San Antonio area. I also have pictures I can send you - I couldn't figure out how to get them on here.
