older dog and puppy
Hi I am new to the forum and new to owning 2 dogs at the same time.
I have a 10 yr old Golden retriever and an eight week old English Staffordshire Terrier. We have had the Staff 3 days now, she is a great little dog, the retriever is and always has been a brilliant dog (both girls) The retriever is very placid and subservient. The Staff on the other hand is very sure of herself but is learning what is acceptable behaviour in our home. As I have said I have never owned 2 dogs at the same time I understand a little of dog society and have decided to let them build their own relationship and work out who is going to be top dog (among them, I am top dog with both and will remain that way lol) Obviously I am ensuring the safety of both dogs. The retriever is happy to just sniff and then ignore the Staff. The staff is insistent on jumping on and chasing my older dog. The retriever doesn't seem bothered by this but has put her in her place a few times ( not tried to bite her or anything, just barked twice and stood over her) The puppy just runs off and then comes back for more I think this behaviour is fine they both seem happy enough. Does it sound OK ??? I have put them in different rooms to sleep as I don't want to risk anything until I an 100% sure. I'm fairly sure the behaviour is fine at the moment but any advice would be appreciated Thanks

You should have no problems with the Retriever. I have two puppy miniature pinschers and an 11 year old black lab. Coco and Guinness are full of energy and love to play, hard and Sadie just takes it, plays with them a little, lets them lay on her, she just loves them.
When she has had enough, she goes back to her room or barks at them letting them know to chill out, but all three get along well. Retrievers and Labs are such sweet and patient dogs that I would not worry about the little one. |
