Question Licking in mid air

Our Bichon tries to lick our faces, which we do not allow so she licks in front of our faces while getting excited. Does anyone know why dogs lick in mid air?

Muzzle licking is a normal friendly greeting behaivor. Since you do not allow her to lick your "muzzle" I imagine that is why she is licking the air in front of your face. My toy poodle will also lick the air if he can't reach my face. He tries to do this when I greet or talk sweet to him.
