My dogs love chewing rawhide. Sometimes when they get rambunctious with it there ends up being a bit of blood on the rawhide. Should I be concerned about this?
This happened with my dog, too. I never worried about it too much. I hope I was right not to.

Bo just loves rawhide. He doesn't ever leave blood, though. At least not that I have noticed. I will keep an eye open for it.

Our dogs also loved rawhide chews till one day My samoyed Kodie started chocking on one . it was logged in his throat. I have to remove it with my fingers. from they day on I have never given him one.
last month I discovered a treat he loves. its called Sam's Yams. thier dehydrated cut yams. they are much more safer as the thing brakes down faster when chewed . he loves them so much we started carrying them in our store. rschaut@fuzzybutzpetbakery.com

The blood on the chew isnt enything to worry about really. however raw hides can be dangorous if your dogs tend to swollow large pices as they can cause the dog to choke or may even cause a blockage in the intestin. If you allow your dogs to chew rawhides please only allow it under supervision and make sure the dog is not swollowing huge chunks.

Quick comment about rawhide.
Please do NOT give it your dogs. Rawhide is not meant to be digested, it is meant to be used as a chew toy but most dogs end up eating it.
Rawhide does not digest and can cause serious intestinal blockages and damages.

our cockerpoo died earlier this year from complications of a surgery to remove lodged rawhide. vet said it probably wouldn't have even been lodged if she were a young dog. As it was though, she was 13. Supposedly dogs can lose some of their upchucking abilities as they age.
I highly recommend Bully Sticks, they are much better thn rawhide and can be digested.

yes, always supervise your dogs with this. Also, the last vet I worked for discouraged EVERY client from purchasing raw hide, as mentioned=not meant to be ingested. Also, if they don't "chew" it right away, throw it out=it harbors NASTY bacteria!!!!
I've heard both sides of the fence on this one. About two weeks ago, I asked one of the vets her opinion on this very subject, and her opinion was the opposite of the last one. So, basically, it's a judgement call on the owner's behalf. Be PLEASE do supervise them. They CAN choke on it, or, it can get lodged VERY easily=raw hides' # 1 problem.
Can anyone suggest a good alternative to rawhide? Something similar to a rawhide bone perhaps?

We use knotted rope chews and nylabones. Aggressive chewers can chew alot on a nylabone before it has to be replaced.

Yup, I would recommend the Nylar bones as well. Takes 'em a while to "get used" to them, after the raw hide, but once they start "workin them" they get into it!

Try greenies, my dogs love them and they are much more beneficial for the dog and safe.

throw all rawhide away./
these forms of chews are bleanched with chemicals. and will sweel in the the dogs intestinal tracts. they can cause suffocation if lodgedd in the throat and extremely serius intestinal Tract Bacterial infections. Some dogs even supervised have died from Rawhide even when the owners were present. due to the fact the owner could not get their hand down the throat far enough to dislodgew the rawhide. Thechemicals in some dogs, will cause oral bleeding, (mouth) and serious allergic reations.
Any smoked rawhides are even worse. Pigs ears are like fiberglass and shoule never be given they will puccture the intestinal tract and cause seriuos injuries

MY dogs will not chew on nylabones what about the new DIngo rawhides are they any better. Nicky loves bones I need a replacement. I have gotten him the nyla bones and he will not touch them even when I have not given him rawhide for days.
I thought bullysticks splinter thats the way they look to me. As for Greenies I hear to many scary things about them.

The bottom line is to know your dog- if he eats and swallows treats like that quickly they may not be good for him. The greenies and booda bones can be safe as long as they aren't swallowing them whole or in big chunks... in reality any toy could potentially be dangerous, so just make sure you watch them closely until you know how they react with different types of chewies!

As for what i give my dogs, they get Kongs, Bully Sticks and Raw Bones. They love them all. Of course my first dog always had rawhide, and thankfully we never had an issue (she lived till 17, and died of old age). I would never trust it again tho.

Nylabones , raw bones
I used to use greeneis but like raw hide I read up that they are not 100% digetsible and have caused fatalities... you may want to do a search on it as well. It is so hard weeding through all the stuff to see if it is 'true' or now

greenies are NOT god for dogs or safe - they are made primarily of wheat gluten - wheat being a top alergen in dogs and gluten making digestion diffficult...
rawhide is also not good or safe for dogs for more reasons than chokin gor 'lodging' - just like the gluey gooey feel to it when you pick it up after your dog's ben chewing, rawhide is a processed product that leaves a gluey substance in the stomach for awhile that taxes the dog's system and makes digestion/nutrient absorption difficult.
Coked bones should be used only as a 'toy' under supervision.
Raw bones are a natural p art of a dogs diet but know how strong your dog's jaw is and what kind of bone is appropriate to feed
companies like natures variety offer products like beef stix or braided beef stix or achilles tendons - al similar to rawhide in that they are the same chewy for the dog, only, as a natural meat product they are more digestible and wil not leave residues for your dog's system to work overtime removing.

I do not give my dogs rawhide, mainly because of the chemicals that can be found in them,
My dogs get beef achilles tendons, and bully sticks and raw marrow bones to chew on
Rawhide is not digestable by dogs. The great alternate is porkhide. Dogs love it even more if it had been cooked in its own juice, fully digestable, causes the animal to salvate which also aids in the teeth cleaning process. There are several kinds on the market, one even comes with a lot of chloraphil which is extremely good for the animal digestive tract and also fresens up their breath.
