iguanas are not as easy to keep as the pet store would have you believe. They sell them as cute little babies that could live in a 20 gallon tank, which they quickly outgrow. They seem easy because they eat veggies- how hard can that be, right? Well, they also have very strict calcium and UV lighting requirements, and if those needs are not met they can die a painful death from Metabolic Bone Disease or calcium deficiency. On top of that, they get very large and they are often pretty crabby creatures if not handled regularly. They are not the best starter lizard IMO. You'd do better with something like a leopard gecko or even a crested gecko. They're nocturnal so they don't require the lighting that a lot of lizards do, plus cresties can live at room temp and don't need a heat source if your house stays around 75-78. Cresties eat baby food (or special powdered gecko diet) and a few crickets here and there. The bottom line is no matter which type of lizard you decide you like, do plenty of research, just like with a dog.;)

What diggitydog says is true about caring for certain types of lizard they require both uva & uvb and calcium and vitamins and a special diet. Don't believe what pet stores tell you. I am a small breeder of bearded dragons I just started breeding honestly but I have been keeping them for the past 7 years. I have 20 eggs in the incubator right now hoping that they hatch! If you would like to know more about bearded dragons, please feel free to e-mail me at stratusfaction_4u@yahoo.com

I have one gecko. Named, Gecko. Yeah, uncreative.
Primarily because we've never checked under the skirt to see if it was a guy or girl.

I currently own a veiled chameleon, a gargoyle gecko, a new caledonian giant gecko, and 3 leos.
In the past few years I've also bred crested geckos, bearded dragons and leos.
I also owned a mali uromastyx and an egyptian uro, a chuckwalla, a blue tongue skink, bearded dragons, red eyed tree frog, a variety of newts, and a schneiders skink.
My husband won't agree to having snakes even though I really want one. :(
