My retriever mix, 10mths old, has large warts in his mouth and one on his chin that bled today after some rough-housing. Anyone have any experience with these things? I'm looking for a few opinions!
Thank you and have a good one,

Are you sure they're warts? It could be chin acne- my boxer used to get that when he was younger and occasionally still does. The bumps look kinda like warts but are usually filled with fluid and blood (yuk!) and will often burst after a while especially if he's playing or roughhousing and they get smashed. We try to remedy this by using stainless steel bowls for water and cleaning the bowl daily with soap and warm water so that it doesn't harbor any bacteria, and also for drooly dogs I always recommed cleaning the chin daily or every other day with something- I've found that ear cleaner works well because it's typically made to kill bacteria and dry the ears, so it works perfectly for chin acne since it's usually caused by either a wrinkly mouth that holds water or excess bacteria. I just wipe the areas down really well with a cotton pad dampened with ear cleaner (chlorhexiderm based is really good for this.) Some cases can even be bad enough for the vet to need to check it out and prescribe antibiotics. Hope this helps!!

Hey Codyz Mom,
My boy Sailor had a wart and the vet called it a papiloma. Fortunately, the vet said it was really only a cosmetic concern, but it is contagious. If your dog has a papiloma, a wat usually around the m outh area, then he probably got it from socializing with another dog who has one or who is a carrier. Good thing is that papilomas fall off in two or three months. Sailor's grew, bled and then partially fell off and then disappeared all together. Now he's papiloma free...
Of course, you should probably go to the vet to make sure that's what it is...
hope this eses your mind some,

Just some more information on papillomas (if that's what it is), since we are going through that as well. Canine Viral Papillomas are only able to be passed from dog to dog, and are generally not harmful. Usually they occur in younger dogs (under 2 years) due to their immature immune system. The appearance of the warts tend to be jagged and "cauliflower" like. My dog had two, one big and one small. They both grew very fast, the larger one appeared like cauliflower, but then the cauliflower part fell off. I never saw the warts bleeding after play though. Today we had them removed to be biopsied...but that's not always necessary. I was able to find a lot of information online....but I had to really dig for it. Good luck...and let's just hope it's acne :)
