Help! Dog Smells of Blood

My husband and I have noticed over the past couple of months that our dog on occassion seems to smell strongly of blood/iron. A few weeks ago he had blood in his stool and we rushed him to the vet. By the time the vet examined him there was no sign of blood in his stool anymore. The vet gave us special diet and meds and that cleared up the problem. Since then we've carefully examined his stool each time we take him for a walk and there is no sign of blood. Still the smell persists. Could this smell be something in his food? It's very bothersome ... I worry that there is a major underlying problem. Also a couple of times he sort of leaked a bit of stool in the house while he was just lying there. Other than that he's been very normal. He hasn't had diarrhea or anything. Anyone know what this could be?

I would take the dog back to the original vet or try another vet if you are not confident in the first one. It may be that the vet started treating conservatively but with its persistence will want to do more costly testing to find the cause. I would not mess with this. It is a medical problem and requires medical intervention.

are you sure the smell is of blood and not more of a rotten smell, like anal glands, bad breath (a smell from the stomach/diet -not the teeth), or a necrotic wound somewhere on him?

If you're that concerned he's losing blood, have a cbc/pcv run at th vets, you'll know then if he is losing blood somewhere.
