Has anyone had experience with using a stun baton on a dog and what voltage was it? My dog was killed by another dog and I'm afraid to walk my remaining dogs. My local sheriff checked with the DA's office. They said they are legal in my area but if the dog dies the owner could bring charges of cruelty. I don't want to hurt someone's dog just deter it long enough to get myself and my dogs to a safe location. I've also seen ultrasonic devices but I'm doubtful that they will work on a dog that truly wants to do harm. I'd like to hear any and all experiences.

Taser devices work safely on animals. Stun guns may not be so safe... but I'm not really sure. I was trained on a taser when I worked for the sheriff's office here, and we had switched to taser because we were told that it was much safer and more effective than the old stun gun. It uses a different type of electrical current and only affects the surface muscles of the body, so the heart and internal organs are safe. They are quite expensive though. The civilian model last I checked was around $700.
Here's a link to a video I posted earlier- in the training and behavior forum where we had a discussion about shock collars and voltage. This is how a taser looks and works on a large aggressive dog...
I can tell you from experience that it looks worse than it feels. It's a pretty scary thing but not so painful, which allows the dog to get up and run away. I'm sure he was scared out of his mind!

i don't have much experience with the ultrasonic device, because at one point my friend who's a doberman breeder tried to use one in her kennel to deter barking- it got their attention briefly but then they went back to barking so we never used it again.
you might also think about a product called direct stop- it's a citronella based spray that comes out with serious force- it will shoot 10 or 15 feet. Much safer than pepper spray but supposedly gets the same effect when it comes to dogs. It's pretty affordable at about $8 per can.

You might have to check into local ordinances about carrying it as well. I also know of a trainer who carries an air horn- that would certainly be loud enough to scare a dog, even if he is pretty focused on your dog. Hope this helps...

Wow....where are you from if you can walk around with a stun baton? Heck, just go one step further and carry a Glock 17. The confrontation would end in a a second. It's easier to carry too. Hands free. I just carry a Kershaw folding 4" knife. Sure, I may get bit once..... once. But the attacking dog will get one pop between the shoulder blades. Sad to even have to discuss, but so be it.

After discussing this with a police officer, I have purchased mace from the local uniform store that supplies local law enforcement. I will be more likely to use this on a dog that approaches than a stun baton because I would be afraid I'd kill a dog and face charges myself. I can tell you that NO dog is getting near my dogs. I won't take the chance. Animal control has told me to report any person who allows their dogs to approach off leash and they will fine them. EVERYONE: Sheriff, animal control, and my vet have been so compassionate through this. I think everyone I've dealt with are dog lovers who emphatize.
