Hi All, first time on this site. I recently adopted adarling beautiful 5 month old Chihua. I've been completely unalbe to paper trin her. I also have a 11 month old min poodle, who is house triained (paper). I get the feeling that she doesn't get the concept at all. My husband is getting upset. It was bad enough when she just went on the floor, I can deal with that, but last night she pooped on the sofa and she's peed in the bed several times. I patiently take her to the paper, try to show her, but we aren't making any progress. I need help. My husband is talking of giving her away and I just couldn't stand that. Thank you. Franes:(

Hi! Since the pup was 5 months old before your got her- did she learn to go outside from her other owners. She may be confused and not know where to go. My dog Rio goes out but from a pup always knew when we were gone for a long time to go on the wee-wee pads I left down for him. Then when I got his brother Nicholas last year- Nicholas was shocked by Rio going in the house and peed on my wall. Hence WHen I caught he I brought outside. It can be very confusing for them. Nicky now always goes outside. Rio also does not use the pads when we are out and holds it just like his brother. I also am no longer required to be away for 12 hours at times so the wee- wee pads are really not needed. But your dog might be confused. You have to keep the pup with you at all times then if you are trying to train on the pads then. So when the dog looks like it has to go you place them on the pad and when they do it praise them. Rio learned it as a young Pup and Nicky doesn't do it. Otherwise you may have to walk the new dog alot, which is better for them.

Also the fact that that pup is still quite small and may not have a large capacity factors in. I'd suggest rewarding heavily when you take him outsde and provide a scheduled time for him to go. You should schedule all of his food intake and water intake if needed and take him out accordingly. Schedule and praising is the key.

Hi All Again and special thanks to the encouragement of the replies. Since the posting we've had one sucessfull outing. I think when all is said and done i know what to do, I was just feeling so terrible earlier when my husband said he wanted to consider giving her away or selling her. We got her from some people who were moving, by choice to somewhere that didn't allow dogs, so right there it tells me not much positive work was done with her. ANd, yes, my poodle has regressed a bit, on the spots that she has soiled. one of my next moves is to thouroughly clean all her accident spots, as I know both of them are attracted to those places. Anyone know of a good product?
By the way, this is the second Chihuahua I've had, although my other chi, rita, who passed away at 14 was a lot bigger. The chi I have now is Sophia and at 5 months she is about 1 1/2 lbs. But I digress, what I was wondering is if any other Chi owners (for lack of better word, perhaps I should say guardian), but have any other Chi people noticed that this breed is really difficult to train. Because Rita took a long, long time to train, just as Sophia is and both Chi's don't take real well to teaching tricks and such. My poodle, Sunny loves to learn and was trained in a matter of days. What is it about Chihuahua's?
Hope everyone is having a great Saturday night. Mine are sure different these days, married, posting on dog sites on Saturday nights at the time I used to get ready to go out....
But i love domesticity and my dogs.
thanks and bye for now, Frances
PS, pls forgive any spelling errors, I dodnt download the internet spell checker, anyone use that?

What a face, really great photo, can't help but go "aw" looking at it. i'll post pixcs of Sophia tomorrow.
Sounds like you have lot of experience. Chi's are different for sure, but I'll just have to get creative. Sophia is so worth it!

I have never had trouble training a dog to go pottie.
I make it fun for the dog. I sing and dance on the way out.
People should use the same word it can be potty or some other.
In the beginning you will have to take them out every couple of hours until they understand what the word means.
Take them to the same spot.
Make a big deal when they go and give them a treat.
I have never had a problem training. Small puppies may take about 6 months. Their muscles may not fully develope until then.
I have never heard of a dog going in their bed. Your bed is the bed they sleep in. Someone correct me if I am wrong here. But that is the first time I have heard of a dog going on your/their bed.
