I use INterceptor about 9 months out of the year. I really judge by the weather. We had an unseasonably warm winter so I've kept my dogs on it all but about 2 months this year. I only treat my epileptic boy with HW meds about every 45 days. He's never had a reaction from the Interceptor, but he's so sensitive and spends so little time outside that I choose to not treat him every 30 days like the others. I also only use all natural flea repellant due to his chemical sensitivities.
We've warmed up enough now that I'm all ready to start using my Frontline Plus again. They're predicting a nasty flea/tick season due to the dry conditions and mild winter temperatures. I just purchased a 12-pak and it should be here anyday.

I used Interceptor for the first 2 years, but now am usind HeartGuard. It seems to be the same. HeartGuard will also pay for any medical bills if your dog happens to get any type heartworm. For fleas and ticks, Frontline Plus of course.

I like interceptor because it prevents a wider range of intestinal parasites. I used heartguard before that, and it seems to be pretty good too. I came very close to trying the proheart-6 injection when i started hearing about the stories of dogs dying! Close call... We have a serious problem with heartworm in texas because we rarely ever have a 'winter' so to speak. It was almost 90 degrees a couple of days ago, but we had a brief ice storm the week before that. Because of that- mosquitos never really die off, and they're horrible in the summer. Most vets in this area reccommend year round use.

I use Interceptor for both of my shelties. Heartgard is not recommended for herding dogs as it has been none to cause heart blowouts especially in collies and sometimes shelties.
I have my boys on it year round as recommended by my breeder.

Herbnurse,
What do you mean by "heart blowouts"? I use Ivermectin for cattle at 6 mcg/Kg. After researching the issue with collie types the general acceptable dose for HW was the 6 mcg. The research did show fatalities when giving megadoses for mange and Heartworm tx. I used horse paste on my Pitbulls for over 10 years with absolutely no side affects.
Regarding collie types there was some issue with the blood brain barrier but I can't remember all the particulars. If anyone is interested I can post references to studies.

I like interceptor because it prevents a wider range of intestinal parasites. That is why I chose that too

My rescue group uses Revolution, it protects against heartworm and fleas.

I use Heartguard plus 6 months a year, Dale really likes it which is great since most of the time trying to get him to take medicine is a real pain in the neck.

I use heartguard, I give my dog one tablet a month, every month. She gets tested yearly (fecal sample) for all types of worms. She has never shown any.
I use Interceptor on my gsd's and aussies. The aussies can be Ivermectin sensitive (and actually it could literally kill one of my aussies she is an MDR1 gene carrier). Not only aussies can be sensitive to Ivermectin, but collies, shelties and other herding breeds.

My vet recommended HeartGuard when I first got my dog, and we've been using it ever since. We do the monthly tablets, mixed up with a bit of wet food, being as Lily is picky when it comes to food and medications!

I have two choices. Interceptor or Revolution and currently use the Interceptor. I have one of the herding breeds that may carry the mutant gene MDR1. This gene makes these dogs very sensitive to ivermectin. They can react to the medication and sometimes with tragic results. Interceptor has ivomectin which is just as effective but doesn't have the same side affects on dogs that may carry this mutant gene. For fleas and ticks I also use the Frontline Plus, again because the Fipronil ingredient it's safer.

That is interesting about the gene Brandi's mom. I read about it here; http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/ And also at a homeopathic site. There are a lot of things that pet owners need to be aware of to keep them healthy. It is awful when they get sick, esp due to not knowing some simple things.
