I couldn't believe it. My dog (Daisy-a 100 pound Rottie) was playing the dog that lives next door (a 100 pound Lab). The lab had a soft nylon (belt-buckle style) collar. Daisy (my Rottie) was tugging on her collar with her mouth while playing and suddenly the lab spun around. The action resulting in a noose being tightened around her neck. As both dogs tried to seperate, the lab spun around again and the soft nylon collar became a death trap. As I tried to seperate them, I realized the collar had become tight as steel around her neck. In desperation I tried to pull on the end of the collar to unbuckle it, all the while tightening the collar even further. By now the lab has completely stopped breathing and has collapesed on the floor. I remember I had a knife, but it was almost 3000 ft. away through my house. I am 34 years old, in shape and still this run seemed to take forever. By now the dog had no signs of life. I was able to wedge the knife under the collar and cut it free. As the dog laid there I began to give her mouth-to-nose CPR. After a while the dog started to breath again. I couldn't believe what just happened. The point of this experience is that your dogs collar should have a quick release buckle and never use soft nylon collars!

One of the 1st things the instructor at the obed. school we go to stressed was to never have collars on dogs when they are playing or when they are crated.

I'm so glad to hear you were able to save the lab!

Stick with the chip under the skin. As much as my dog loves to escape out of the gate I would never put a collar on my pup. I have heard stories of dogs trying to dig under a fence and getting caught, either injuring themselves or worse.

I bought a Chinook break-away collar for Natalie a while ago, still need to get one for Sebastian (they did'nt come that small at the time) but I don't leave their collars on as often as I used to anymore. Its scary that dogs can get hurt so easily during play or even just in there crates.
