my dog has taken up the habit of chewing on his nails. i cut them when they get long but i dont know why he is doing this . maybe out of boredom? there is no health condition that i can see that would irritate him to chew on them. the only thing that is wrong with his feet is they feel a little dry and im going to get him some lotion to heal his pads. does anyone have a suggestion.

I read this and thought it strange I too live on Long Island and my dogs have been chewing on their feet. Rio was at the vet a few weeks agao because of the chewing and the vet shaved his paw and under all that hair he had an infection going. I always take my dogs to the vet to get their nails done because then I know they can cut them shorter Im to chicken to really cut them and the dogs get annoyed with me. My vet gave us an antibiotic spray for his paws and some antibitic pills. If it seems bad I would bring your pet to the vet. Nicholas does the paw licking a little bit at times but not excessive like Rio was. I resorted to also putting dog booties on Rio to stop him while his feet healed. I always wipe their feet when they come inside from the sand and rock salt especially in the winter. Yet this winter hasn't been so bad. What ever you put on your pets feet just remeber make sure its ok for dogs cause they will lick it right off. Good Luck
