i cant find anything on it for you. thats unfortunate. and i dont know anyone who uses it. i find it hard to believe that they have to investigate if the medication could cause aggression as a side effect. the reason i think that is. its a very common side effect in alot of human drugs, what makes it so different is we cant get inside the dogs to see what they are feeling.

I'm sorry to hear of this incident.

I have had two of my dogs (an aussie and a GSD) on previcox for almost a year with absolutely nothing but positive results.

I do agree, that ALL meds can and will affect differently, as in humans. What "one" can take , another "one" may not be able to tolerate for whatever reason.

It is a miracle drug for my aussie who was so stiff she couldn't move. She snapped out of it within two days of being on previcox. I have recommended this drug to many friends and all that have used it have had positive experiences.

It may be as you say, this dog for whatever reason, may have not been processing the drug correctly . (My aussie carries the MDR1 gene which prohibits her from a long list of drugs in normal doses that could kill her)

I'm so glad your god daughter won't have any lasting effects, physically or mentally.

I wonder how fast some of these people switched from one drug to the previcox..It clearly states in the previcox flyer, you don't want to mix this drug with other drugs such as rimadyl, etogesic, etc..Maybe they switched to fast and the combo of the drugs really threw the dogs out of whack?
Just a theory.

I hope it get's figured out.

Gypsy is an 11 year old Aussie. She takes about 250 mg of Previcox every day along with a few Joint Max tablets. The combination has truly enhanced her quality of life. I saw the difference within the first month. :o

Gypsy has had both back knees replaced due to torn ACLs so those joints were getting arthritis, plus her front ankles were getting so painful with arthritis that she was limping badly. Now she walks nicely - still with a very slight limp on the front ankles. She feels really good - enjoys her walks, likes to play - and has a great appetite. I know there are risks, but we've decided that it's worth the results.

She has shown no attitude changes. She's gotten a bit grumpier with younger dogs if they approach her too quickly or come near our front door. From what I've read, this grumpiness is normal behavior ... an older or weaker dog feels more need to protect themselves. Perhaps in some breeds this instinct could turn into aggressive or snappy behavior. Gypsy has never been comfortable around small children - so I keep them away from her at all costs.

So sorry for what happened to the child!

Listed as a side effect: Change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, incoordination, seizure, or aggression).

Usually with drugs, the 1st side effect listed is the most common, then others in descending order. This is listed as #4. However, I would think this is more of an adverse event which is usually unexpected, vs side effect which is unintended - fine line. However, in humans adverse effects are reportable to the FDA after being on the market. The FDA can pull something off the market like Vioxx & Bextra (non steroidal antiinflammatories). From my searches it looks like animal medicine is also controlled by the FDA, so vets should be reporting this if there is an increased incidence. Veterinarians should have access to prescribing information that lists the percentage of time this side effect occurs.

I went back and reread the faq on this drug. It's listed under serious s.e. "Serious" side effects usually occur <1% of the time, "side effects" can occur 10-20% of the time. So this is a rare occurence, although known to happen. Again, my position is that if the local vets are seeing an increase, they should be reporting it. No one wants to see a drug cause aggression! There is a central FDA reporting system where they look at reports nationally/internationally and decide whether a change needs to occur. One person's experience doesn't usually pull a drug off market.

Even if there are increased reports, they may just have to relabel the drug for specific situations. Sometimes it can be dose related, or there is some co-existing physiological condition, etc. It's obviously a good drug in most cases. Obviously works for Gypsy!

It has certainly helped our dog to enjoy his life a lot better

However he certainly is more aggressive when playing with him.
Before Previcox he would grab you with his teeth but not really bite into you. But now he really bares his teeth and tends to sink them into you a lot harder.

We have had him for 11 years and this is the most aggresssive he has ever been

Cheers
