Hi everyone. I just joined. I've been a dog owner all of my life and my newest little reward is Shanay, all of 8 weeks old tomorrow. I brought her home 6 days ago. The owner is a friend of mine and the pups were in a family home setting. Two weeks ago the owner decided to let the puppies run loose around the house for the duration before the new owners took them, and unfortunately they adapted to soiling their carpets very quickly. Now that I have Shanay home with me, she has that nasty habit.
My last three dogs (all toys) were kitty litter trained. I needed executive dogs due to the job I had, so that my dogs would go potty by themselves and wouldn't have to be let outside or hold it all day. This worked well in all three cases. Now, with little Shanay, I am potty training her to the litter box with a puppy pad in it. When I put her in it, she goes potty. Twice she has ventured to the litter box all by herself and poo'd. However, she ALSO loves to relieve herself all over my carpet. Even after she has urinated, 5 minutes later she is marking the carpet with a spot of urine. I was timing her to go once every 1/2 - 1 hr or after she ate or drank, but all this marking and spotting and pooing when least expected is running me ragged.
Is there anything I can do to discourage her from using my carpet? She accepts her potty and is happy to use it when I bring her to it. I don't dare try to walk her there as she will squat before she gets there, which is only 14 feet away from the livingroom into the hall. I don't want to park her litter box in the livingroom. Frustrated but loving the little squeak.
Thanks,
Glenda
