Does anyone have ideas of how to exercise a doberman in the rain... My female hates the rain and will not go out in it hardly at all... i have to lock her off the porch with a puppy gate to get her to go potty... then i feel horrible because she is soaked and cold and well sometimes waits to go potty still until she comes in even if i leave her out thirty minutes or longer..
I am not sure exactly what to do. My husband and i have been talking about building a place for them to go that is covered completely so they can still go outside but dont get all wet and dirty however iw ould just like her to go out and potty in the yard... and come back in.\

been there too- only with my boxer. My dobe loves water, including rain. The boxer, however, that's another story. I spent many days outside under an umbrella wandering in circles just trying to get that darn dog to go to the bathroom. He's never warmed up to being in the rain for any amount of time, but he will run out to do his business and then run straight back to the door. If it's nasty out I just try to take him to a pet store or home depot or something, that way he gets a little activity, but lucky for us, here in Texas, the weather is usually pretty nice. We had a 70 degree Christmas day, for gosh sakes!

Dogs follow their leaders lead, that's you. And if your standing inside or under some kind of porch but telling your dog to go out in the rain, your sending mixed signals to your dog. You won't go out in it therefore to your dog, there's something wrong. It's the same as two people standing outside a dark cave, one saying to the other one, "I'm not going in there, you go." Would you? And if your talking to your dog and trying to get them to go, your making it even worse. i hate to break it to you, but to teach them there's nothing wrong, your going to have to go out in it yourself. And while your out there you can't act like anythings wrong, and you can't rush the dog, again, that's telling the dog somethings wrong. And it never hurts to do a little walk in light rain either. Also don't feel bad for the dog having to go out, your dog reads what your feeling and again, not helping. But it is up to you to take the lead, and check out the cave.

Why do you not take an umbrella out with you? Also, dogs are masters of reading our body language, so standing out in the rain them only works if we're not irritated (and most normal people are). I mean who's "really" thrilled about standing out in the rain waiting for the dog to poop? As far as exercising your dog when it's raining goes...treadmills are great for that, but you have to teach the dog to stay on it, keep it at a normal walking pace, and do not leave the dog unattended.
