I've been contemplating getting the Furminator but it doesn't look like it will go through the thick Newfie fur. Did you see it used on a Newf?

Thanks - maybe I'll try it. I'm sure it will work great for my cats, too.

I've never even used a rake on my newf - she gets brushed & combed nearly every day so she has never matted anywhere - but, even with all the time spent brushing, as with any newf, there is definitely lots of shedding.

If that works as well as it shows....it is totally worth the $40!!! I just bought a $40 dustbuster to pick up the hair off the couch and other surfaces....but that is even better! I might just have to raid my coin jar...and get my one of those....Boomer is a terrible shedder!
Thanks for the link.

I would love to hear the experiences of people who have used the furminator especially anyone who has used it in a professional setting. Feedback, please!

There's also a much cheaper generic version called the 'shed ender' which I purchased for $12 on ebay- it works just as well.

I bought the shed ender for my rabbit and it works fantastic for her (her coat is similar to that of a medium haired cat). It works just as good for my wire-haired terrier mix. His coat is impossible to brush because it's thin, short, and wiry, but the shed ender pulls out so much lose hair. I haven't had as much success using it on the lab though. The best tool I have for a lab coat is the 4 dollar rake from Target. I get bags of hair off her! The furminator looks like a combo of the rake and the shed ender. I bet it would work better on the labs coat. Too bad it's so expensive!

I haven't bought or used one yet, but I went on ebay and they're available even with shipping at much better(cheaper) prices. Even from US.

After reading this I am going to give my furminator another try. I had gotten one at a pet trade show to try to decide if we where going to sell them. Even Wholesale I thought they are very exspensive. of course the week I got it I had my dogs groomed really short- Two Cockers looked liked Chi's for a few weeks. I did try it then so I guess I didnt give it a fair shake. Now they are fluffy will try it again and post the rusults of fluffy cockers.

Hi! Oh wholesale like you said not a great deal at all. I just don't get it. In the pictures I see tons of hair off these dogs. I did two cockers the other night and got almost nothing off them I get more off them with their dog brushes. I use the bamboo dog brushes I love them- but this furminator thing I must be doing something wrong. I tried going with the hair then not with the hair still very little hair came off. Am I doing it wrong. My dogs last hair cust where about a month and a half ago but they have a good head of hari on them now.

I have to laugh I have so much hair all over me and the house then I pull this thing out and nothing much comes off. Maybe their winter coat will give me more satisfaction doing it with the furminator.:)

after seeing this thread and contacting the two groomers who offer this treatment in my area this may help those above who used but didn't see much hair come off their dogs. apparently they do a 20 minute shampoo and conditioner which loosens the hair particles while massaging the hair with the furminator. after the dog is completely dried, then they use the furminator brush and thats when the real results occur. the treatment in my area is 50 bucks at one place and 80 at another. I'm gonna give it a try and see how well it works and will report back. both groomers told me it was about a 4 hour process...

I've personally tried the furminator and love it.... As many know, I have a rottweiler and mastiff who are shedders... I took them to this new store that allows me to bath and use all their stuff, great concept, loved it, and there was the furminator.... After both dogs dried, I used it and it was picking up the hair of the undercoat like it was nothing.... I spent about 30 minutes each per dog, making sure I was getting every loose hair I could find... I didn't see loose hair on them for about a week, so this thing works... It has greatly reduced the shedding in the house, for sure... Thumbs up for me!!

You can go to Shedender.com where you can buy the Shedender for $14.99, but there is a store called Linens and Things that carries alot of stuff that is only seen on tv, and they had the ShedEnder for $9.99. Bed, Bath & Beyond is another store that might have it, although Linens is where I bought mine.

I've used it several times on my WGSD over the past couple of days and can't believe how much hair it's pulled off, just like in the picture! :D

I know!! is that not the most amazing thing?? I feel like such a dork getting so excited about a dog grooming product, but sheesh! Talk about a life-saver!

lol... you got that right... I don't see anymore dustbunnies!!! yea!!! I brush them with it about every 3-4 days, and it works wonders... My vaccum cleaner for one isn't having to work as hard to pick up hair... I'm just thrilled with this thing.... greatest dog invention in my book!! Linnea

O.K. I was a professional groomer for over 20 years. I specialized in broken coated terriers and did show grooming as well as pet. I mentored under a woman who had bred and showed Scotties since 1946 and Sealyhams since 1958. Back then (heh, heh I'm dating myself), we would slide the smaller section out of a 15 blade and use it to "card" coats. The Furminator looks like one of these blades. I finally got my hands on one and tried it on my own terrier. It works O.K. but I believe grooming stones work better. They are harder to find locally but can be purchased over the internet. I believe they remove more hair in a shorter period of time than a Furminator. Just my opinion but I thought I'd weigh in.

I didn't want to pay the larger amount of $$ for the furminator, but I bought a sheddender off ebay for like $10, got it today and it works pretty well. It works great on my labs, and okay on my shepherd terrier mix, and even surprisingly well on my pit(I usually never get any real hair off of him from a brush, but it really got the underneath stuff). They all enjoyed being brushed with it except my little one with super short hair. Anyway, if the furminator is even better I'd like to try it one day, but for now the shedender is pretty good. Like the furm its supposed to work better after a bath so...another day.

I am new to this board, I have been a professional groomer for 18 years and I love using the furminator, however it is a tool that can do great damage and please use caution. I have seen quite a few dogs getting their coats damaged and even burns on their skin from incorrect use. The dogs coat must be clean and free of tangles to begin with. Always work with the natural lay of the dogs coat and use light pressure. I love the tool and I certainly don't want to discourage anyone from using it, but most of the injuries that I have seen have happened because noone thought that this tool could harm a dog and it can. By the way I use it on several newfies with wonderful results, not only does it radically reduce shedding but it also leaves a wonderful smooth look to the coat, however you must have that type of coat COMPLETELY combed out beforehand. You should be able to get comb through all the way to the skin without any resistance.

hehe.. I got excited when I first used the Shedender when Dakota was blowing her coat last Spring. I only had to brush her for one week and her shedding stopped.. I was so impressed. I haven't brushed her since spring. But Fall is just around the corner, so it's time to break out the Shedender again... :)

Shedender + Dyson DC-14 = No Hair.. Gotta love it..

I got one on entirely pets.com or some website like that (ran a Froogle search on Furminator) and it works well.. only problem is it takes awhile with my dog. Even though he's small. Maybe I'm not using it right? Any suggestions? I pretty much just rake outwards in the direction of the hair.

The grooming stones sound like something worth trying though.

For what its worth: I retail the Furminator at our dog bakery & boutique. It was the first product we ever sold. I have always guaranteed them to my customers and have only had one come back and she exchanged it for the larger model.

In addition to the tool working well it also holds the hair in the comb for easy removal unlike some other tools that let the fur fly.

Does anyone know if this works on cats?

Woof
09-27-2006, 05:19 PM
Yes. The company claims it does and I know I have sold two to customers who were satisfied with them, one being my own employee who would have returned it in a heartbeat if it didn't work. She is our resident cat person.
