our family dog, Ping, is medium-sized, about 50 lbs. Few wrinkles compared to most SP's. Very good with people, not so good with other dogs. We need to find a new home/owner willing to find the source of the dog's allergies and deal with his skin problems. Please contact us if you have questions. Thanks,

You didn't say how old your dog is or how bad the allergies are.
We are lucky here to have a board certified vet allergy/dermatologist - Dr. Margaret Phillips. She is on Nolenville Rd. between Nashville and Franklin. You will need a referral from your vet and she generally wants your dog off a food with beef and corn before she sees you.
Then it's just a simple allergy test and perhaps a change in diet or allergy shots. All very easy.
You could also get on the waiting list at The Nashville Humane Association (a no kill shelter). Don't be daunted by however long they say the waiting list is. I just had a client who was told it would be 2 to 3 months before there was an opening for her two black labs.
It only took two weeks.
We did have a Shar Pei Rescue group as well, I haven't heard from them in a while. You might want to ask around about them.

The dog is 6. In the summer, the allergies are bad enough that he'll chew himself raw. This time of year, he just licks enough to make the house smell like a kennel. We've considered using Dr. Phillips, but do not have the budget to. I will look into the Nashville Humane Society, thanks! And I have the information of the Shar Pei Rescue of Tenn. 931-967-4423.

What a stupid reason to give up a dog...hope your kids do not get allergies!

This is a bad place for allergies. I had none in Detroit. Here I get allergy shots.
It sounds like your dog probably has both food and seasonal allergies. It's hard to control the seasons - a bit easier to control the food.
Most common allergies are beef and corn. Chicken is next. So you might start with a food that is lamb and rice and make sure there is no corn or chicken in it.
Then Benadryl daily can help. The dose is really easy to remember - it's 1 mg per pound. A normal Benadryl is 25mg so give your guy 2 of them 3 to 4 times per day. Don't get Benadryl though, it's too expensive - get Waldryl or the Kroger brand. At Kroger it's about $4 for a hundred pills.
I use something called Antronex that is available...well, I don't know where. I get it from my chiropractor but I have clients who get it either on line or from health food stores.
Don't bathe your dog too much, no more than once every two months, but do wipe it down with a wet cloth when it comes in to try to get allergens off.
Keeping him inside most of the time shouldn't be too hard since he is 6.
It's possible you can keep the dog and take care of it just as well as most anyone could.
I have a lot of clients who could afford allergy testing and treatments but don't or won't.
Your guy sounds like a project. Most people just want to adopt a dog not a project. A Shar Pei with allergies who is 6 and doesn't get along with other dogs is not going to be an easy adoption.
Because you have already invested 6 years into him and I assume love him you might just be the best home for him after all.
There are some inexpensive fixes for allergies, like the ones I've listed that might be worth as shot.
