I want to know what I can do about this trainer that hung my pup till he almost passed out, lips turned blue and he pooped himself... One of the most HORRIBLE things I have ever seen. My dog drooled and just layed around for the next 2 days. Why did he do this, well, we were in a training class, we were suppose get our dogs to lay down and be held there, I was trying to do that, I have a very active Aussie mix, anyway the trainer came over and roughly tryed to hold him down my pup, nipped his skin a couple times and the trainer got mad and hung him. I have been told by the aspca that hanging a dog is an excepted way of training, BUT not like my dog was hung..
Any thoughts???
Thank you, Aimee

Sounds like a horribly misguided attempt to "submit" your pup to his authority!
Get rid of that trainer, report him to wherever you found him (rescue, PetCo, etc) and find a trainer that uses POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT as a training basis!!! You also may wish to report him to the police and see if there is anything that they can do along animal cruelty lines?
I wish you and your pup the best and let us know what happens! Good luck!

Believe me I'm NOT going back to that jerk!! Problem is this, is a rural area, and there are no other trainers. So I got on Amazon and ordered a couple tapes on training, think it was something called "The Monks of" I forget how to spell the rest, but I heard it was a good training tape. As far as reporting the jerk, I did report him to the ASPCA and am checking with a lawyer on what else I can do.
Thanks for your reply, Aimee

Just asking about the Monk tape, is it really good? My dog, isn't a bad dog, he just has a problem being restrained.. He loves people and other dogs, and has more energy than any dog I have ever had..

I can't comment on the tapes or books from first hand experience but I've heard good things about them over the years. The re-mention of them in this thread has prompted me to bid on two of their books on E-Bay. I've been meaning to check out their training methods/philosophy for a long time.
My trainer did this to my dog, as well. In fact, she used the choker SOOOOO much, as a reprimanding tool, that Venus actually became terrified of it, and fled the room when ever I would pick it up. It took months of gentle coaxing to reaffirm her suspicions and reduce her fears.
The trainer claimed her ways were "old school, German methods", and she had a room FULL of trophies and ribbons as indications of her obvious achievements, but when I witnessed her hanging" Venus=yes, Venus was coughing and gaging, I thanked her. Told her my approach was different, and we never went back. When I heard that one of her mastiffs had turned on her, and took a chunk out of her hand, and had to be "put down" as a result, I knew my decision to leave was the right one. I worked with Venus every day, thereafter, using MY methods=LOTS of praise, being soft spoken, yet consistent, lots of repetiton, until she "got it", etc, and she turned out to be a really GREAT dog.
I will ALWAYS believe that you attract more bees with honey, but, that's just my opinion....

This is the classic Koehler Method of Dog Training. Sadly, it is not illegal in the U.S., just inhumane and bad science.
The Monks of New Skete advocate slightly less violent methods but are still a but too physical for my taste.
I would suggest Patricia McConnells $5 booklet "How To Be The Leader Of Your Pack". It's really all you need to know. It's the underlying foundation on how to train your dog. The rest is just technique. Trial and error. All dogs are different.
For the philosophy of how to build a great relationship with your dog try Suzanne Clothiers "Bones Would Rain From The Sky". Your public library should have that.
Also "The New Work of Dogs" by Jon Katz, or any of his books, which should all be at the library.
My personal opinion is that you can't really learn about your dog by reading a book, unless your dog has written a book.
For me, dog training is not about whispering, it's about listening, observing, always being respectful and compassionate.

Nice post! Well written!!!:)
Very true, ...Venus and I say ALOT to each other, by not saying anything at all...
If I may, "The Rosetta Bone", by Cheryl S. Smith, as a great read as well.

WOW!!!..........that is so sad that the traditional trainers are still doing things like that. The Monks of Skeet or whatever the name of the book does a bit of traditional training. Patrica McConnell is a great trainer and she has some great books.
Here is a list that you can find positive trainers. It's called the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Here is the link and you just click on trainers and then click on the state you live in and hopefully you can find a local positive trainer. It is all alphabetically and just find your local city to find a trainer. Don't know how much damange was already done to your dog.
