Question dry skin

are terriers prone to dry skin? my dog has dry skin she chews and scratches till it's red or bald and my brother's pit and his friends pits have dry skin too. is there something i can do. i find stuff that works at first but then she starts back up .when it's really hot or cold outside or if she gets fleas (which is rare) i've tried no chew spray but my dog likes the taste of it.

This is what is in Ol'Roys dog food.
Ground yellow corn, meat and bone meal, soybean meal, wheat middlings, animal fat (preserved with BHA and citric acid), chicken by-product meal, brewers rice, animal digest, salt, calcium carbonate, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, vitamin E supplement, zinc oxide, niacin, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin A activity), calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, cobalt carbonate, folic acid, sodium selenite.

No meat at all in this food, not a good food at all.
You need to go to the pet store and buy food that does not have corn in it.
Canidae is a good food.It will cost you more,But your dog will eat less and poop less .So in the long run it's better.
Don't buy dog food and the same store you buy your food at....

Hi and I'm sorry to hear your dog isn't doing well. That definitely sounds like allergies which may or may not be food related. It could also possibly be mange.

The food you are feeding is actually a low quality. I'd change to something else like one of the below ASAP if possible

Some better foods are:
Timberwolf organics
Merrick
Nature's Varity
Innova
Canidae
Dick Van Pattons
Wellness
Natural balance
Solid Gold

If you can't get any of the above here are some other choices that aren't as good but still beter than what you are feeeding IMO
Foods like
Diamond
Premium Edge
Blue Buf.

Also you can add omega fatty acids such as Fish oil, Salmoln oil or Flax seed to help with skin and coat

Make sure not to bathe tooooo often and brush at leats once a week especially in the summer

it just comes and goes does mange do that? i dont live near a pet store and i've never heard of those foods. so i'm guessing iams and stuff like that isn't a good brand? i'm buying her food with my allowince and i just spent all my money on skin and coat vitamins thats suppose to help dry skin, and i got hydrocortisone with aloe spray. how do u feed them flax seed?i know we have some. we stoped useing that and switched to the flax seed oil (which i take for my dry skin) what does corn do to dogs?

If you could buy a better quality food you would not need to buy all the suplaments.
You can get Flax seed, salmon oil.or fish oil Capsules at wal-mart.

Food is most likely the problem. But could be allergies. Or a growth stage.

Ol' Roy is just about the worst food you could feed. It would be like us eatting the worst thing at a fast food place our whole lives.

Terriers, at least the ones I have, dont' do well with food with ANY type of corn in it. For skin, I add a little yougert in my food and I feed foods with Omega 3 and 6, or with Linelic acid.(all the same) If they have really bad coats, I wash them with SOAP free shampoos and may put them on a supplement (Dogymes, Nature's Pharmecy OMEGA OMEGA). If you are washing her too much with soap based shampoos that can dry her/his skin also. I really like Wags...soap free, smells good, won't wash off flea and tick spot ons. Also, is she on any flea/tick medication. Sometimes, his/her dry skin can be caused by fleas and ticks biting, some dogs are allergic to them.
Good Luck!
