The dreaded question  ... with the constant recalls, what are you feeding these days. And if it's raw, what guidelines are you following related to nutritional content, safety of food handling, etc. Any links would be appreciated.

Timberwolf here for over a year now...
Timberwolf Organics is not involved in the recent pet food recalls. We do not use any ingredients sourced from China and our pet food is manufactured in the USA.

California Natural Herring formula here, still feeding it. Toby (Irish setter) gets raw. It's my own diet, I developed it after reading different places. I really like the book Switching to Raw, by Susan B Johnson. She's a setter person and the book was well written. www.switchingtoraw.com.

I've been feeding a raw prey model diet for over a year now. By sticking with meat/bone/organ ratios similar to the prey animals of wolves and feeding a variety of animals/parts, I make sure Geiger is missing anything nutritionally from his diet. As far as food borne disease, I use the same practices as I do when preparing food for myself. Some of the links that helped me early on:

It's good to see that original food choices have seemed to work out well! I remember some of the old discussions about which food to choose. We're using Innova.
I go to a pet specialty food store - they're having a tough time keeping stock. They don't even want to recommend any longer. They'll only say "well, today this one is thought to be quality..." They have a great variety though.

I am having a hard time with cat food though. I currently feed nutro's light cat food. I would like to switch to feliade or whatever the counter part to the dog food i feed. But they don't have any carriers around here.

Lily is now on California Natural. We were doing Iams for a short time, until the Iams we were using got recalled. I was able to contact Iams and the woman I talked to sent me a voucher for a free blood test for Lily. Thankfully all her bloodwork came back just fine :)

I feed both of my dogs holistic dog food......Blue Buffalo but only the dry. I have just gotten an email from Petsmart asking me to bring back the canned Blue Buffalo that I purchased to replace the recalled Ultra Choice Natural. The Blue Buffalo company tested their food and even though none of the cans had the melamine in them they were still produced by one of the companys that might have contaminated the food. Now I will stick to just the dry.

Has anyone ever tried Nature's Variety?

Some other schnauzers I've met online are using it but I've never seen it. Do you think it's good nutritionally?

I recently read it in Newsweek that freshpet products has not been affected by the recall. My Huskie is on it right now. I did a little reading up on their website and this stuff is pretty impressive. It has the benefits of feeding Raw food minus the Hassel (meat going bad and bacteria). Anyways im using Homestyle Select Chicken... i understand they also carry another brand too, called Delifresh. But i dont really see the difference in the two products.
Anyone thats interested i found their site pretty helpful:

I was feeding my two girls Iams and my boy Prescription Hills food until the pet recall. Then I switched to home made cooked food. But now, reading this thread, I'm starting to re-think about raw food. I'm doing more research and may buy some of these books to learn more about raw feeding. Hmm....

When I say raw I mean raw meat, raw meaty bones, and raw organs. Some people feed pre-fabricated ground raw stuff.

Jasper and Chinook got Canadae. I switched Chinook to all raw the last year of his life which he responded really well to it.
Indy is getting Orijen (which is 0 grains and the meats used are hormone and antibiotic free). He may get switched to raw once he is a year old ..
