Jasper had been one of our auction rescues a couple years ago and was then rehomed. We recently welcomed him back to us. Here are a few pics from this morning:

Actually we did investigate into that awhile ago. In the end, the cost of the insurance was a major factor why we didn't pursue it more. It is also why we do not offer wagon rides for profit.

That was the thought that came to my mind too. But if you could it would be well worth it.

I would love to say we adopted him out but the truth is legally, he would have been considered just sold as we did not even use a written contract at that time and we are not a rescue anyway in terms of legal definition. The lady that we sold him to though had verbally promised to allow us first opportunity to buy him back at the same price and I had checked her vet reference with her other 2 ponies. I trusted her, I really did. We kept in touch off and on for more than a few months and I felt confident Jasper had found his forever home. A few months ago, I read an ad that listed a donkey for sale named Jasper about the same age. Something just told me to check it out plus I thought how many donkeys are named Jasper? I contacted that lady and through some question/answer interrogations (lol she must have thought I was a nut at first) I discovered this was indeed the one and only Jasper that we had originally pulled from being sent to a livestock auction.
Apparently that lady I had trusted had really sold him while she maintained the farce to me that all was well. The lady who had listed him for sale had owned him for months and was now selling him because she wanted a horse her daughter could show and didn't have the space to keep Jasper as well. She is a wonderful lady and really adores Jasper. I ended up buying Jasper back for what she had paid for him.
Some positives are that one, Jasper found his way home again and two, I have a great friendship now with his last former owner.
I don't know what the answer is when it comes to individuals trying to help and re-home animals. I use a simple contract now but I doubt it would be upheld in court.

I guess you just do the best you can Clark. I think you are doing wonderful things for the animals you meet.
