I adopted 2 puppies who just had their first vet visit about 1 & 1/2 weeks ago. They had everything except one worm and one parasite. They also had some kind of skin problem but the vet said he'd worry about that on their next visit (in one month) and that some of the meds he gave them had antibiotics in it that might cure it by then. Since then one of the puppies has lost almost all the hair on his head and now it looks kinda crusty and has little blod spots. The other puppy has a thin spot of hair that you can hardly see. I need to know if I should take him back to the vet already or wait until his appointment, or if theres any information that would be helpful until his next visit.

Could be alot of things; mange, allergies, ring worm, subarea dermatitis (sp?) or could just be puppy growing. hard to say with out seeing it. I would take him back. But if you want you could try running it under a black light if it is ring worm it might glow. If it does you know it is but if it doesn't it doesn't mean it isnt'. Not the best test but free if you have a black light. You can also try some antibiotic or antifungla creams on it. But again hard to recommend without seeing it.

I'd be annoyed with the vet for giving antiobiotics to a pup without good reason. Was any skin scraping done to test for mange? Did the vet test for ringworm?

It could be either of those things or maybe puppy pyoderma, foliculitis or any other number of things.

I hate when vets just guess like that and prescribe drugs especially with a pup
