Hi, new to the forum. We are about to get a new puppy. our last dog had to be put down about three years ago due to old age and I am starting to miss having a dog. I like to walk a couple of miles a day and I am wondering how far a pup should be allowd to walk and how old I should let the her get before being able to take her the full distance? I know that this will vary for differant dogs but I am looking in general. we are possibly looking at a black lab. she was cut open in several areas of her body by someone and left on the side of the road to die. the shelter took her in and nursed her back to health. i have a cat that we got about 3 years ago, and found her the same way, cut up and part of an ear missing. she healed up nice and is a beutiful cat so I figured that we should give this pup a chance.

How far the pup can and should walk depend on not only the breed and age but overall health. Puppies should not be walked in any high dog traffic areas until they have had their full series of shots. waling around your yard or where other dogs don't go is fine. You are better off training socializing and playing around your house until then. Puppies little joints need to grow and not be stressed and pushed plus with young pups their attention span is not very long and long walks would be more of a torture to them... they'd become bored IMO. So start out a couple of blocks at a time and add from there as you train and they grow
Hope that helps.
Good luck woth the adoption. I hope it all works out
Hi I am new to the forum. I just got a cute little Jack Russell female.
I asked a vet when I could start walking Maggie. He told me not until you get her rabbie shots. That will be done in May. The vet I have has an insurance plan. You pay a one time charge for the year. That includes all yearly shots, texts for diseases and getting fixed etc. Includes I think so many visits a year. That is what I plan on doing. She seems so healty I know I need to get her check. But the lady who looked at her for s short time. Said she looked like she was right on target. Good Luck. Hope information was helpful.

I tried taking my new puppy for a walk the first week we had him. He's 7.5 weeks old, and he REFUSED to go. He would walk about a half-block distance and then get really scared and start shaking and whimpering. I ended up picking him up and carrying him home. I was also kind of wondering when a good time to re-try walking him would be.

I would try again IMMEDIATELY. Or as soon as you can. You never want to give a puppy the impression that shaking and acting scared will get him what he wants. If that happens again, just turn back towards the house, but NO picking up, and MAKE him walk it. A little verbal encouragement, but not too much because you don't want it to be seen as praise.
In this situation you may have been taking him too far for his age, so keep walks short and sweet.
Thanks! :)
