OK...So I'm training a beginner class the other night and I ask them what kind of problems their having with their dogs.Well this one woman raises her hand and tells me that her one year old Shep mix keeps sneaking off and peeing on the carpet of one of her rooms and when she comes home and finds it he growls at her when she tries to hit him for it.So first I explain to her that's because your hitting him well after the fact and he has no idea what your hitting him for and secondly hitting him especially when he doesn't know why is going to make him afraid of you so of course he's going to growl. So then I ask her how many times a day she walks him.She says once.So I asked her can she go to the bathroom just once a day?Of course she says no so I tell her well neither can he,that's why he's peeing in the house,he can't hold it.So I tell her that I walk Kujo a minimum of 3 times a day sometimes more just to give him something to do.She says well I'm not going to walk him that much but I guess I'll try doing it twice a day. Then she wants to know if she can't hit him what she's supposed to do if he pees on the carpet,I said clean it up and move on,but chances are if you walk him enough he won't do that.Sorry, just had to rant. The ignorance of people when it comes to their dogs really gets to me sometimes!

j/k can't believe she's too lazy to take her dog out more than once...get a freakin cat if you don't have the time to walk your dog.

hmmm... people are amazing... I had a set schedule for Isabella when she was a puppy, a schedule that set her up to succeed, and boy did she ever... I've never had problems with her in housetraining... It is as easy or as hard as the owner makes it.

Exactly Rott.I explained to her how important feeding and walking schedules are and that even though Kujo is almost 3 he is still on a walking schedule and that I don't even need to tell him when it's time to go out he comes right to me looks me in the face and wags his tail.I get up to get his leash and before I even get off the couch he's at the door.I've had him since he was 10mths old and he's never had an accident. Some people come to these classes and think we're going to fix their dogs with out them doing any work. That the hour a week they spend in class is going to fix it without them practicing what we're teaching them at home. The one thing I always tell them is that their dog is not the only one there to be trained they are, that the object of the class is to teach them how to train their dogs and that what they learn in class has to be practiced and reinforced at home for it to work.

I'm curious what you tell people to do when they work 8 hrs but are really gone 10 hrs.
I have a dog walker so it's not an issue for me. I was never comfortable crating my dogs for that long. I worried that when they get older that they would end up with bladder problems. Besides they like the walk during daylight! |

Even if your gone 10-12hrs if you walk the dog before you leave and then when you come home that's still twice in a day. Most adult dogs can hold it that long. But once a day would mean taking the dog out in the morning and not again until the next day!Even twice a day is alot more realistic then that and something most dogs can physically do.

I guess I introduced other issues here - one is the schedule they need to housebreak, and the other is just making sure they get out to potty and or exercise. Sorry to get off track. Most working people are responsible enough to get their dogs out more than once I day I would think.
I know what you mean about the schedule though. Even with working we have a pretty set schedule, and they make me stick to it on the weekends - LOL. I know what time it is by the dogs gathering at my feet with that expectant stance. |

On days when hubby and I work the same schedule, Reggie and Winston, he comes home about 1/2 way through his day to let them out, feed Winston, and play a bit.
Reggie and Winston also have a routine and even on my days off, I am up at 5:30 am..Winston gets his insulin at 6 and needs to eat before that. Then it is out to play and pottie. I take them out to pottie atleast 6 times a day, including walks and play time.

I think if your dog is expected not to relieve himself for 12 hours while you are gone, neither should you.
So careful with that coffee. Not too much tea at lunch. 12 hours is a LONG time, personally I would not be comfortable leaving any dog in a crate for more than 6 hours, and for me that makes me uncomfortable, I don't like leaving them to not be able to stretch and pee for more than 4. JMO as always.
