stunning, powerful dog.. I'm seeing them on the "aggressive" breed lists. If raised right, they make wonderful pets.

I've only been around them at Rare Breed shows. If you are really interested that would be a good place to go and talk to owners and breeders

I don't know much about them maybe it was just his training and socialization, but they same the same about Akita's and my Kujo is great with other dogs unless a male dog is threatening him.

really? everything i've read says they are not good with other dogs. good to know I would imagine that like other dogs it depends a lot on the individual dog's personality. In general I'd guess that most aren't thrilled with strange dogs though
here is a good link about their history for you:

You posted a pic of 5 presa canario's standing beside each other who were not trying to eat each other. Just like any other breed, if trained and socialized most dogs will get along with another dog, unless that dog isn't trained and socialized. They are not inherently evil as some have said. Are you thinking about getting one?

those dogs are part of the same kennel so i'm sure the pecking order is in place and really isn't what i was referring to. I was talking about dog aggressive towards dogs they don't live with already.
i've been considering a presa or a cane corso

I have met a couple in passing, but have more experience with cane corsos as I've trained several over the last year or two. I really like canes. (I learned from a breeder that the cane is actually pronounced like connie because it's italian.)
I think that presas are on a lot of 'dangerous dog' lists because the dogs that killed Diane Whipple were presas. Talk about a bad introductory meeting to most of the american public...

They are large and powerful, and just like any other bully type dog need heavy socialization and training from an early age. Canes are not much different. They tend to be very wary of strangers and are pretty protective, although the ones I've known have been big babies once you meet them, despite the fact that they will scare the daylights out of you when you're on the other side of their front door. The only other thing I can say about canes is that they tend to be a little aloof and therefore need a pretty experienced hand for training. They seem to know when you can be taken advantage of, and are just too powerful of a breed for a beginner, IMO.

I have always been an admirer, but reading up on themand I thought the breed just wasn't for me. :(
In some ways, they are similar to the Tibetan Mastiff, which is what really made me love them, but they just don't have the presence I want.
I would love to see more of them around though, they are gorgeous dogs!

Please note though that the 5 pictured standing together are from one of the best training kennels in the country. They are VERY WELL TRAINED dogs. This is not a common thing, that many getting along in this breed.

If you are intrested in the type of dog and the look, you might do some research on the Cane Corso breed. The Corsos are similar in looks and breeding, but VERY MUCH more stable in the temperament. The corso is a better choice if you are wanting family friendly, dog friendly, etc. They are protective yes, but they have a much more stable temperament than the Pressa.
You can see some Corso Info at our site: www.CorsoPups.com

Someone named hakan on this site has some pretty impressive photos of a canario! I saw them in the gallery, but the linked website is not in English.

...VERY MUCH more stable in the temperament.

Why do you think that? Is there a negative personal experience(s)?
I met one cane corso, never a presa canario. The cane corso I met was reserved but not aggressive towards me. And I didn't know it was pronouced as connie, very interesting. Thanks for bringing that up Diggity!

You're welcome! I actually really like the breed, and had I not gotten Marlo when I did I would have brought one home- the lady I trained 3 of them for is a small hobby breeder, and her female failed her OFA, so she wanted to find a nice pet home for her, just a month after I got Marlo. What a bummer, I would have loved to have had her, very pretty blue brindle girl, and the vet said the hip issue was minor and would not requre surgery. Possbily meds when older, but pretty much said just to let her be a big couch potato so she didn't injur herself. Sigh...
I'm not sure about presa's being 'unstable', I don't think there are breeds that are unstable, maybe individuals, yes, but that can happen with any breed. The presas I've met have been well socialized and well behaved.

I often think that I'd love to have a presa, but where I live, Toronto, has a bylaw against pits and staffs, so I think presas are probably illegal here, as well.
I have no doubt that I could successfully raise and train a presa to be a well-behaved, socially acceptable member of both canine and human society. and I could do it without prong collars, or any other kind of device like that.
but it would be quite a change from the poodles I'm used to. I just want to work with big dogs again. I miss that.

Presas are not covered under the pitbull ban in Ontario.
