Doggy Boot Camp

Lol!!! Some one posted this on craigslist a couple of days ago

"Does anyone know of a good, reliable doggy training camps. I am looking for one that I can send my dog off to and get him back fully trained. I am looking for one that does not use shock collars or anything similar. If anyone has any information please let me know. My puppy is 8 months old and out of control!"

Heh... It made me laugh for some odd reason.... lol

I know. And even if some one trained his dog its doesnt seem like he would apply any of it so his dog would slowly forget.....

Yep, if the owner won't reenforce it, then the dog isn't going to do it... You should send him a educational email.

There are a lot of misconseptions about board/training. I offer that to my clients- as does cesar millan in certain situations. I do occasionally have a client who doesn't want to do any of the work, but for my boarding school once the dog is trained the owner is required to go through a certain number of private lessons to teach him or her how to maintain the training. It's actually a great way to get training for a busy family or for someone who has a dog that has serious behavioral issues. Of course it doesn't work if the owner is not invested in improving his dog's behavior, but it's still a good (and very popular) training program. For some reason a lot of rescues discourage people from doing it, and it drives me nuts. If any of them are unsure about the process or what actually happens, I wish they would call and ask me instead of recommending to my client or to their potential adopters that they don't do it at all. I will work with my client one on one to come up with a training program that best suits their needs- but the bottom line is that most dogs need training if they want to keep their new homes, so what difference does it make how the owner chooses to go about it? At least they're seeking some kind of help instead of getting rid of the dog.

That is why I stopped training for people. It really upsets me to have someone want their dog trained, but they don't help in the process. The people are the ones who need to be trained, not the dogs!

I think I will stick to training horses & exotics, at least the volunteers/handlers I work with keep the process up!
