Angry This really made me mad

I live in an Apt.building with most of us owning dogs of all kinds.Well last week the cops were here serving warrants on my neighbors next door. While the cops were outside my upstairs neighbor who just moved here from Chicago because of the PitBull ban came down with his two Pitts.Brother and sister,4yr.s old and so sweet and friendly.Well he had to walk past the cops to get to the dog walking area and his dogs payed no attention to the cops what so ever.Their very obedient and well trained.Well the one cop pulled his gun.YES!Pulled his gun.Well,it ticked me off so bad I almost got aressted.I went out there and asked him why he did that and after telling me it wasn't my buisness he admitted it was because of the breed. So I asked him "If I would have came out with my Akita would you have done the same thing"?He said"Probably"I said well in that case I would have been in jail.I would have put my dog up and came back out and proceeded to tell you what I think of your ignorance.I then waited for the guy with the Pitts to come back and stop so I could pet and play with them and show the cop how sweet they are and what a fool he was.I'm so sick of this breed discrimination.I mean these PitBulls and my Akita actually play together. Two breeds with bad reps. When are people going to realize that it's not the breeds,it's the owners and the lack off training and socialization they give their dogs?Sorry,I just needed to vent. That kind of stuff really ticks me off.

There is no pit ban in Chicago. That is a myth. They have been kicking it around for a long time but it hasn't passed. Now the shelters do destroy pits instead of adopting them out. But you can own them in the city with no issues. I say this living in chicago with my inlaws a block away and they own a pit.

Let me correct myself. He didn't say banned but restricted. He said they had to carry insurance and they had to be muzzled in public. He moved because he feels as I do.If a dog is well behaved and not agressive it's cruel to have to muzzle them in public simply because of their breed. He was also in a suburb of Chicago. He lived in Tinley Park.Either way,I still feel that cop was out of line!

O i agree about the cop. I had no idea tinly park past a breed act. There are several subs that have banned pits. But I didn't know any of them made them muzzle.

From what I've learned on the web,the cities that don't ban them but restrict them require them to be muzzled in public at all times. They have to be registered as a dangerous dog and the owner has to carry $100,000 in liability insurance.Their trying it in several cities for Akita's to and if it happens where I'm at I'm out of here.My Kujo is very sweet and gentle unless I'm threatened and there is no way I'm going to punish him for no reason with a muzzle. That cop needs an education on what makes dogs mean.

They have been banned in some of the suburbs. A few were grandfathered in after beening temperment tested but i saw alot of them dumped in pounds out side that city after the fact.

I can understand a vicious dog being put down for attacking people regardless of the breed, but to classify any breed as dangerous and ban them in my opinion is a violation of our civil rights.Where does the government get off telling us what kind of dogs we can own?I've known poodles that are way more vicious then the large breed dogs I've known. When is the government going to educate itself and realize it's the owners not the dogs? That cop was totaly out of line with what he did.Especially since it was quite obvious the dogs had no interest in him.The owner was very offended as he's worked hard to train them and socialize them and their very well behaved, but he bit his tongue.I was a different story on the other hand.Especially having own a dog that was going to be put down because of his breed and is as sweet and friendly as they come!I felt the cop was very unprofessional!

I agree but you have to remember when cops come in to a place with pits or other large dogs they aren't usually like that. And he had no idea if the owner would have them attack or something. It's got to be really hard to be a police officer the last thing they are worried about is offending someone.

Try to understand that the police do not usually see well behaved bully breeds. Perhaps that officer had a pitbull used against him before, hence why he felt the need to be so "guarded". It doesn't make it right nor does it make it easy to feel sympathetic but I think this would have been a chance to educate someone on how good a properly raised dog can be despite all the common misconceptions. It must have been a shocking thing to have happen so unexpectedly and I bet it would be tough to remain cool about it.

Someone needs to show him how great a well rounded pitty can be.

I agree with you totaly on that note, but I think the cop could have just put his hand on his gun and been ready.I don't think it was right that he just pulled it out of the holster. What if the dogs owner was very scared because of that and the dogs sensed it?They could have reacted agressively trying to protect him and then there could have been a really sad situation.Being prepared is one thing, going over bored is another!
