so yea, due to financial issues i had to switch my dogs from nutro to purina one... i know its not a good food but it was the only one in the grocery store that had chicken as the #1 ingredient instead of corn... just wanted to see what yalls input on it was...

ok... it's not good dog food. You already know it's not good dog food, so what else do you want us to say? Confirm it for you?

It is not the best food, obviously. I used to feed it to my dogs when I was not working. They did fine on it and I switched to to the good stuff as soon as I could. Hard times are upon many of us. I am sorry you are at a point food is an issue. I have been there, and it hurts. Get through it and as soon as you can get them off it. That's the best i can do. It is not good food, but it is not the worst. I'm not wild about Nutro either tho.

Well, you already know it's not the best food out there. But, it's better than not eating at all right? right. Back in the 80's, when i didn't have a computer/internet to search on for more choices, my rotties ate Purina One. And, that wasn't for financial reasons, they couldn't handle (at that time) Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, which were the premiums at the time, it upset their stomachs too much. So, I had to find something that they could handle and eat. And, today there are more choices for me to try. Currently, my dog has allergies to different foods as I found out. While he loves chicken and turkey he can't eat that. I have been thru Eagle Pack (which he loves, but I don't like it, and they just changed their ingredients), to Wellness, now on California Natural, which he is turning his nose up to. I am going to try Fromm's next, and then Natural Balance. Ugh. I can afford to feed my dog and cats the best, they are just too happy to disagree with me on that though.
Try this and see if you can afford it. I believe the Purina One (I am going to go by my prices in my area) is 17.99 for a 20lb. bag. Chicken Soup is 19.95 for the same and is a higher quality. Also, whenever you can go back to feeding something of higher quality, just my opinion, I would go for something a little better than Nutro.

AGREED. Chicken Soup is in that price range but is a better quality food than Nutro or Purina One. It's a Whole Dog Journal recommended food.

I just put Kujo on Chicken Soup awhile back because he has so many allergies and his skin was really drying out and he's doing a whole lot better. As was said,it's a good premium food at a reasonable price.

I am coming to the conclusion that to open a thread on dog food will never really result in anything more than opinions, which is fine but just remember that none of us here are canine nutritionists and though there are some valid points being said, there is always a second side. I am sure Purina itself would argue that their feed is fine and exceeds federal standards for dog food.
Purina One may not be the "best" bagged dry dog feed available imo but at least it is more balanced than many of the less expensive, grocery store brands.
Consider trying Diamond Naturals, which is also inexpensive. It is $19.49 for a 40 pound bag at Tractor Supply. There are no corn or by-products in it. Comes in chicken and rice or lamb and rice variety I believe.
