I thought I would just share some "enjoyable" books that I've read whose main character was a dog. Some classics, some aren't. I recommend all. Let's let this thread be on doggie books you've read and recommend-- there's nothing better than on a relaxing day and reading a dog book...

Puppies, Dogs, and Blue Northerners by Gary Paulson
Dogsong by Gary Paulson
Woodsong by Gary Paulson
The Wolfling by Sterling North
Baree, The Story of the Wolf-Dog by J.O. Curwood
Kazan by J.O. Curwood
Lassie by Sheila Black (about the early '90 Lassie movie)
Lad: A dog by Albert Payson Terhune
Wolf Brother by Michelle Paver
The Intelligence of Dogs by Stanley Coren

OMG... I forgot this one... lol... You know I read this one in a bookstore in like 4 hours. Just sitting there drinking my coffee and reading this book... It's a really good book, even though Marley sounded a little too hyper. I recommend this one who find hyper yellow labs endearing, great book though. Cried when the author explained her passing.

I have read Dogsong and Woodsong. Gary Paulson is a great author. Some of the sledding stories are great!!

I have a client who had a severe separation anxiety dog. He was medicated when I worked with him over a year ago- and has since been prozac free, but not perfect. She told me that she read Marley and Me and it really helped her through the ordeal with Louie. She wondered at times if Louie should be put down because he was so bad- he was hurting himself to escape houses, crates, fences, etc, and her whole life revolved around what to do with Louie. She literally did not leave her house without him for months and when she went to work she dropped him off at daycare every day! He was also slightly dog aggressive so he didn't get to play, he was just supervised for 9 hours so he couldn't rip all of his teeth out. She had a major change of heart after reading that book and I plan to buy it soon and see what it's all about.

So I just finished Marley and Me, by John Grogan. Totally worth every penny. It reminded me so much of the dogs that I've shared my life with, and no matter how horrible, I could never have thought of giving them up. At the end he talks about how only after he was gone was he able to view Marley as a teacher and mentor. So true. I don't believe that I would have a dog training career if it weren't for the misguided behavior of my first dog, and that of many a friend's dog, too. But, you never realize exactly what it is they were trying to teach you at the time. It's a real tear jerker- but a good read. I couldn't put it down, read it cover to cover in three sittings!

Yea, Marley and Me was a good book... I saw another dog book that's out, but I can't remember what's it called.. Looked VERY good... I'm going to check out the bookstore on my day off to get it... Another good book that my mom got me for my birthday this year was " Dog Heroes of September 11th". I can't believe I forgot to mention it before, but it's very good also... Some of the stories were "wow" and just make you think. Makes you remember... Alot of the dogs were not certified therapy dogs, but ended up provided MUCH NEEDED therapy to the emergency response people... Good book...
