Exercise caution when around dogs

A dachshund administered one of the worst dog bites Dr. Franz Keilhauer has ever seen.

"It doesn't matter the size of a dog," said Keilhauer, a doctor of emergency medicine at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

Keilhauer estimated Mercy doctors treat two dog bite victims per week. Sometimes bites require emergency room treatment and sometimes they call for surgery.

He advised immediate treatment for bites to the hands and face and bites to children. Bites to the hands and face are easily infected, he said.

Parents should minimize risk to their children by teaching them how to react to dogs.

"They should not be approaching a pet or a dog without an adult supervising them," he said.

Children need to know not all dogs are the same, he said.

"Even though their dog at home may be completely friendly, other dogs might not be," he said.

And adults should follow rules about how to interact with their own dogs and strange dogs.

Don't come between two dogs and don't bother dogs while they are eating, Keilhauer recommended.
