I think they are beautiful dogs...but my only personal experience with one was very negative. Glad you rescued your pretty boy.

I'm really sorry you had a bad experience with an Akita.Do you know if it had to do with his training? When properly trained and with constant reinforcement of you being the alpha they really are great dogs!My Kujo is such a sweet, loving dog.Yet he doesn't realize that at 100+lbs and he's to big for a lap dog...LOL.He's absolutely wonderful with people and children however he won't hesitate to go after someone doing me harm. They really are very loving and loyal to their family.I'm just glad that I was able to save such a sweet loving animal from an uneccessary death.God was with us that time for sure!

He was trained really well...they though. Could make that dog do anything i swear. Well one day we were over visiting. And her son had some friends over they were playing fetch with the dog. And the little girl sat down on the ground (age about 12 i would say, don't remember exactly) any way she just sat down cause she was tired no biggie. But the dog took it the wrong way i guess. Brought the ball back to her and took off half of her face. One of the nastiest things i have ever seen. (I was watching from the deck) To this day can't figure it out. We all though he was a really good boy. They of course put him down asap. The insurance company demanded it.

thats' just so sad and what a thing to have to see.Akita's can be very unpredictable with children. As good as Kujo is with my grandkids,I never leave him alone with them.FYI....A golden rule with the breed is to never leave a child under 12 alone with one.Not to say your friend did that.Kujo is well socialized even with children but he still dislikes them except for our family children. They are also known to bite if teased by a child.I hope the child is ok and I agree with the decision to put the dog down!

I never heard what happened to her. I'm sure several facial surgeries. She's lucky she didn't lose her eye. The people paid lot as they were sued and homeowners would only cover so much. they also moved not too long after that.

I love them dearly. They are certainly not a leave them to themselves dog. Training is a must and constant alfa reminders are required. They are aloof and prefer the immediate family. My problem was as a new owner purchasing for looks, I did not train mine. I saw the beauty, not the breed. I bought my first then rescued 2. Soon there were fights between them over me. I had to retrain myself. The dogs followed right behind. I personally would be more afraid of a Lhasa than an Akita. I see far more nasty little dogs than large breed dogs. That is my line of work tho.

O i agree. People with little dogs don't feel a need to train and they can be totally uncontrolable. I always hated dealing with them at work. Espically the ones with no muzzle, not much to hold on to there and nearly impossible to muzzle. It's just that when big dogs go bad they do much more damage generally. In all my years in dogs I have only been bitten by one big dog. A really sick husky, it was my fault i didn't want to restrain him as much as i needed to, poor guy was hurting so bad. But i have been bitten by several little dogs, usually getting them in or out of cages. Live a learn...haven't been bitten in a few years... knock on wood.

I have only been bitten once by a big dog at work. I was doing a nail trim and the owner was "holding" her. My fault too. I should know better than to have an owner hold! It work where they are not allowed to use the word owner. It is parents. Spoiled rich little dogs. I totally agree with you on the lack of training little ones, and in my book tricks don't count.

I do not own any Akitas but at the humane society here (where I volunteer) we have 5 pups that we found but no mom. We bottle fed them. We think they might be Akita mixes. LOL one of them has short basset legs so maybe they are akita/basset hound? :D They are cute

We have a St. Bernard/Akita mix. He is the sweetest dog but very protective of the family expecially of me and our daughter. One thing I have learned is not to take Toby to the park with us because he gets very protective of any person (child or adult) that comes near our daughter.
We get a lot of solicitors around here and none have come back to bother us since we got Toby. Just the size and the fact that when you ring our door bell he is the first to greet you at the door scares most away. He is also our neighborhood watch dog because he will sit on the steps and watch out the front door and alerts me to anyone who isn't suppose to be on our street.
We got him from the local shelter around here because the family lived in an apartment and couldn't keep a dog that big. I fell in love with him the moment I saw him.

I don't have an Akita, I think they're beautiful dogs though. Oddly enough, it's an Akita that has the honor of being the only dog to bite me in my training career. I was working with one many years ago when I first started training, the dog was a resource guarder and had big time leadership issues. I asked her to lie down and she took a chunk out of my arm.
Beautiful dogs, but not for the faint of heart.
