Hi, My Yorkie is a year old now and is still growing her coat. Several people have mentioned that I need to trim her ears. Her ears are perky and dry inside with very cute feathers. The feathers aren't tangled or matted.
Is there a special trim for Yorkies?
Thanks.

There is a yorkie cut that involves cutting the hair on the tip of the ears pretty short. You don't have to do it though, she's your pet and as long as the hair is not matted and there are no ear problems and you like the way it looks you can do it however you want!;)

Yup, Diggity Dogs is absolutely right--traditionally "yorkie ears" involve shaving the top 1/3 of the leather with a #10 blade, then evening up the feathering on the rest of the ear. It's not something that has to be done, however. Especially if you like the way your pups ears look as they are :). For instance, cocker ears are also shaved short for the top 1/3-(whatever looks right), but I love my baby's full, "lady-and-the-tramp" ears. So I leave them full. It's all based on what you like to look at!

I just had this conversation with my boss (a groomer) today. I have an Irish setter, who would get cocker ears if trimmed traditionally but I LOVE his fuzzy cute ears! I only trim his feet and the feathering behind them on his legs, and I take out all the fuzzy hair that sits behind his ears and has tendency to hold dirt and/or mat.
It's all a matter of preference!

Hi Starfish! I do a very similar haircut on my dachsie lol. No hair where it mats behind the ears, short feet and feathers (he grows a little "tutu" around his back legs that drives me crazy!). Not what you're *supposed* to do with a long-haired dachshund, but I like the way it looks. I catch a lot of flack about my cocker's cut because I am a groomer, but whatever...:). I like her ears the way they are!

Bottom line is your dog, your choice. Now if you want a show look(breed standard), then ear tips need to go, but I have several clients who happen to love the fringe. I am a fringe lover as well. I think it makes them soo cute. Try both looks if you are curious. That's the beauty of hair. It grows back.
