Hi everyone.
I was researching dog behavior & training when I found this site. I'm so glad for the opportunity to learn from & share with other doggie people.

I've always loved & wanted a dog of my own. As a kid my parents wouldn't hear of it. I was desperate. Every night I prayered that my stuffed lassie would turn real by the morning! well you know that didn't happen. so 1st thing I did when I got my own place was buy a dog.

I always had pure breeds : airedales & goldens. I still favor those breeds.
But then a niece asked me to take her 4 yr. american eskimo mix when the new baby was allergic. Sammie was the smartest dog I ever had!
so I was sold on rescue. since then I've adopted 2 dogs from rescues. I'll post pictures when I can.
Darla ia a sweetie. she's the shape of a doxie with the marking & color of a jack russel. Her personality is in between. she was very shy & under nourshirhed when she came home with me. She's very dignified. As my kids say "she never smiles". she's a great dog!
this summer I adopted winston. He was a Katrina dog. He had heartworm & lyme when we got him. He's healthy now. He's a terrier. My vet says he looks like "a cairn on steroids". Looks just like 1 but 30 lbs.
He's just the opposite of Darla. He's a big clown!
He's quite a handful. Haivng been in shelthers for a year he has no manners. We start obendience class this week. I have a lot to learn!
I've never had an animal with so many bad habits: chewing, digging, mouthing, & plan not listening! any help along the way will be appreciated.

glad to be hear!

Welcome, Bernie! We're on the other side of the state and I too love goldens. Adopted a 12 year old from the humane society where I was working and I long to some day adopt another senior rescue like Lady.

It sounds like you've got your hands full with little Winston! Obedience classes are a good start, and I think you should try the "Nothing In Life Is Free" (NILIF) program- he has to earn everything he gets from treats to potty or play time by working for you. Ask him to sit before he gets fed his dinner, etc. When we get a stubborn dog here in our rescue, we sometimes have to use the "umbilical" leash method, too and keep that dog tied to us at all times when s/he isn't in a crate. These two exercises help reinforce your place as leader because you are in control of all the happy things.

Thanks for looking to rescue to adopt. Since you love goldens and airedales so much, have you considered perhaps volunteering at a purebreed rescue like Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue or Almost Heaven GRR? They're both at least somewhat local to you (DVGRR is).

Welcome aboard! Hopefully we'll hear from you regarding little Winston's progress!
