Hello everyone I am new to this sight and just purchased an English springer and I was wondering what other owners can tell me about the breed. In the past I have had terriers (scottie & Westie).

Welcome!

Springers are very active. LOL :D Just make sure it gets some obediance training. ;) Also they are working breeds so they must be excersised daily.

Were there any specifics you wanted to know about the breed?

BTW I would love to see some pics of your pup!! :D

Yes you have a hunting dog and I have one myself but a German Shorthaired Pointer. You will have to do alot with your dog very active and they have alot of energy and need to burn it off in some way.

Your Springer was bred to flush out game out of bush's so the hunter can shoot it down. The springer comes from them lunging forward to flush out game. After the hunter has shot down the bird he goes and retrives for his owner.

Where did you get your dog and how old?

Springers enjoys as much exercise as you can give it. They need lots of it to be happy. They should have chances to take long walks and run and play off the leash. They love to retrieve and swim. These dogs perform very well in both agility skills trials and obedience competitions.

I hope this helps!

I've seen a lot of springers as a groomer, and one of the things I've noticed is that they tend to be v-e-r-y protective of the person they choose as "theirs," even to the point of attacking anyone who makes a friendly advance towards the owner. Maybe it's just the springers around here, who knows? But socialization is very important--you don't want to deal with what many of my clients have to (muzzles for any sort of public venture, telling well-meaning admirers to STAY AWAY, not being able to host stuff at your home). The flip side is that my nice ones are AWESOME, make me want a springer someday :). So happy and excited to be alive, not to mention one of the most physically beautiful breeds I've seen... OH, speaking of that, be sure you get your pup used to grooming implements, including the slicker brush and nail clippers :) (just a bit of groomer propaganda lol)! Grooming will be a big part of your dog's life, especially if you keep it in the springer 'do. The "field cut" is easier to keep up, but will still require frequent trims.

Springers are a gorgeous and terrific breed when they're well-bred and socialized! I do love energetic dogs, and they're a ton of fun! Congratulations on your acquisition!
