What shampoo do you all use? I have found that normal dog shampoo makes my collie's fur too soft. Soft isn't a real good thing in the show ring for collies. So I use human shampoo and the whitening (purple stuff) on his white areas.

Any suggestions from those groomers out there?

At our shop we use the PetSilk line. A lot of them are a little detergenty and will soften the coat but there is one really great formula called Rosemary Mint that really leaves the coat feeling natural, what I call "squeaky clean". The flea formula (not a dip, just a flea shampoo) also REALLY cleans the coat and leaves it feeling natural, not soft. I have often used it on dogs that don't have fleas that are very, very greasy. Those two are my favorite.

We've also used (and I use at home) TropiClean shampoos and most of them seem to clean without softening the coat. I use Awapuhi White on my English setters and Berry Clean on the rest of my dogs with great results.

And whitening shampoos for horses seem to really help clean without leaving a film or softening the coat. But I don't know what kind of coat you're exactly looking for so I can't help you!

A smooth collie's coat is rather harsh almost like a horse's mane. i can't think of another breed at the moment with a simular coat.

I would call Chris Christianson. Isle of dogs makes a harsh coat line. Maybe call them. I use a clarifying shampoo if i want the hair really clan and not softened. CC After Bath conditioner is great for conditioning without build up or softening.

I either use human shampoo or horse shampoo.

I find that the horse shampoo gets their coats a lot cleaner than human shampoo, but when I don't have that, then I use human shampoo or baby shampoo.

I use a hypo-allergenic tear-free shampoo with minimal ingredients unless they really stink or are super duper dirty or break out in itchiness. It doesn't strip the oils out of the fur, but still gets 'em clean.

Human Shampoos can strip alot of the natural oils that dogs produce to keep their coats healthy. A dogs skin doesn't breath the same as ahumans does.

Royal Treatment Pet Spa makes a pet freindly tearless product that also smells very nice. The product is made by Prince Lorenzo Borghese who will soon be appearing on the TV Series "Bachelor in Rome".
