What I hate about rescue

I must vent. We were looking for a cat to keep our cat company as for the first time in years there is no one home for 6 or so hours most days of the week. We wanted to help out an older shelter cat. But were turned down because our dogs aren't fixed. I understand their point. But I pointed out that the cat we have is neutered and the cat from there would already be done so what is the problem? We show our dogs, it's not like they are just sitting around with balls. lol. This just makes no sence to me. My un-neutered dog is going to breed with a spayed cat? I'm just outraged... So like any good breeder would. I went and found a reputable cat breeder and we are getting a retired munchkin this weekend.

I hear you on that!

When I got Callie, we looked into adopted a shelter dog from a rescue, but I wouldn't spay Callie until she had gone through her first couple of cycles. I explained my reasoning to the shelter, and even though we were applying for a neutered boy, they wouldn't let us adopt.

How stupid.

We do not adopt to homes with intact dogs generally but you do conformation! And, it's not even a dog that you want to adopt... give me a break. That's something that I try to tell everyone at the shelter I work for- there is no set-in-stone policy, there can't be or you'll never find homes. *sigh* And it's so rare for anyone to actually go *looking* for an adult cat.

The one I don't like about rescues is that alot require a fenced in back yard. I can't STAND that, because they are losing good homes because of that rule. If I'm a betting woman, I would say that dogs get walked more when their is no fence as a crutch for the owner, than the dogs in the fenced yards.

Smooth, good luck with your new cat, glad you found one!!

THat is SO TRUE! Edmund Bacon, the city planner, had a really great quote about dogs and the city. How both humans and dogs were more sociable because of their need to be walked, as opposed to in the 'burbs. Can't find it, but it stuck in my mind.

Philadelphia is FULL of dogs and their humans. I go to the park and see dogs enjoying each other's company, while the humans talk....but to some rescue orgs...those humans do not provide a fit home for a dog who desperately needs one!

We were turned away from a rescue, different from the one with the spay/neuter situation, because our fence was only 6ft and not 8ft in the back...
I had a hard time believing that, but they equire an 8ft fence to consider adoption.

We had such a hard time going through a shelter that we ended up adopting of off CL... and we brought home our beagle for free! I think he got the better end though!! (JK)

Ee... the excitement of a new pet coming home!

An 8 foot fence....

Where do you even GET an 8 foot fence? Seriously, I don't even think I've seen them at the usual places around here.

I'm just happy when my adopters actually HAVE a fence. That doesn't mean that a known runaway fence-climber/jumper is going to be adopted to them but most dogs will stay just fine in even a four-foot fence.

Required an 8 foot fence....honestly, do they WANT to find the dogs a home or what?

LOL to an 8 foot fence. I think the neighbors would start wondering what in the world you were trying to hide. Can you imagine what that would look like around your back door?! Pretty soon, the government would be knocking on your door, hahaha.

I think the fence stipulation is good in certain cases.. an elderly person adopting for example or a home with children for safety reasons.

Ok... I know we have some rescue people here... Does your rescue require the adoptee to have a fenced in yard? Is there a height requirement, a type of fencing requirement(meaning chain link, or privacy fence, or either)? And what are the reasonings behind this...

Yeah... an 8ft fence.

The thing that really got me is that we have a 6ft fence for the kennel and around the property, so essentially two 6ft fences that the dog would have to get through...

I really think that some of the rescues out here are just "rescuing" to keep the animals.

At one rescue, that is at PetsMart every Saturday, we saw a mix that we were interested in. They wouldn't let us see the dog... they told us that we had to put in an adoption application before we could see him. Then they proceeded to tell us that he was unavailable... this was over a year ago and this dog is STILL at the same shelter.

Another rescue wouldn't let us have a dog because we were not home all day. They required someone to be with the dog all day, no school or job. I actually complained to them and said that finding homes where one person is there always is virtually impossible... better lighten up the standards.

It just gets on my last nerve...

But I guess I ended up with Zero, so it can't all be bad!
