Yikes! Well, I found my Tori's brother (a littermate believe it or not), and of course brought him home when I found out he was no longer wanted. Well, he's been either tied out or running loose his whole life and he reeks of skunk. I bought this skunk odor remover stuff, followed the directions, but he (and now the whole house!) still smell like skunk! Help! I've never had a dog sprayed before, so I'm out of my leage. Any advice? Safe home cures? Products? I can't take this much longer, but I refuse to banish him to the backyard. :(

supposedly washing him in a bath of tomato juice should help, but in my experience even if you use tomato juice it has to happen several times before the odor is gone. Even once he seems to not smell anymore, the odor will still be there, he'll just have a faint musk when he's dry, but the skunk smell comes back full force when you get him wet for a bath or if he goes swimming. Sorry to hear about your smelly situation!!

We just had this same problem with Buck a couple weeks ago  We just gave him a bath with ordinary shampoo and let the smell wear off over the course of a few days, but he got some of the stuff in his eye and made it really irritated. I have heard that a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will work. Just rub it on your dog and let it sit for several minutes, then rinse it off really well!

Baking soda, dish soap and a bottle of peroxide mixed in a gallon jug will really really help get rid of the smell. I tried the tomato juice too and it didn't seem to help much.

Vonissk, I love you!!!
Tried the dish soap/peroxide/baking soda this morning and the stink is gone! You can smell a bit of "le skunk" if you put your nose in his coat, but otherwise wonderful! The big guy and I both thank you!:D
And thank you to everyone who replied! Discuss dogs to the rescue!

Massengil Douche works better than anything I've tried. Tomato juice is a joke. The peroxide, dish soap & baking soda works almost as well but, believe it or not, the douche is the stuff to use! I got this info from a book, "Doctors Home Remedies for Dogs & Cats"

How much dishsoap and baking soda? Does it matter what type of dishsoap? I've used the douche before and it made a difference but I'm always open to something better since nothing I've tried eradicates the odor completely.

My recipe says 1qt peroxide (3%), 1/4c baking soda, 1-2tsp dish soap. Dawn is the dish soap that rescuers use in oil spill situations cleaning up birds because it removes the oils so well and is not harsh on the skin, so it's what I would recommend. It will do a better job of removing the musk oils.

being in the grooming bus. for years,,the thing that I found the best is mechanics orange solvant (hand cleaner) works best,,,skunk spray is a grease,,once u hit it with water it spreads,,,use the degreaser with no water,,scrub in good to affected areas and then rinse,,just remember that they usually get sprayed in the face,,so the smell embeds down their ears and in their mouths and eyes. its nasty thats for sure
