Uggh. I am very much not a fan of Labradoodles. It really bothers me how "designer dog" breeders can just cross 2 breeds and add "oodle" to the end to get people to buy them :( Jerry IS a very cute dog, I just strongly disagree with the breeding of Labradoodles and other mixed breed "designer doggies".

I agree Dragon. Lab/Poodle mixes can be good dogs, just like any other mix, but theres no purpose for the breed or continueing to irresponsibly make more mixes under a guise of breed expansion. Their popularity has just misplaced more dogs in shelters and theyve ended up in shelters as well too, some places even have their own 'breed specific' "labradoodle" rescues. As neat as a mix as they may be, its not worth the lives of other dogs, and I'll be glad when the fad is over.

Jerry is a cutie, I'm glad he has a caring owner, but please jeerythelabradoodle, get informed and while enjoying the life of your friend and all he brings to your own life, try to see that while he may be a great dog, he's a mix not a breed and shouldn't contribute to the gut wrenching pet overpopulation problem by any means.

My apologies- welcome to the forum

Most of us here are well aware of why they were bred, but the problem is that the reason they were bred and what they actually turned out to be are two different things. If you look into it you'll find that when they were originally bred in Australia, (they've all but abandoned the practice of breeding them for assistance dogs) although it sounded like a good idea, genetics cooperate with no man. You can't breed a dog that sheds and has dander with a dog that sheds little and has little dander and get a full litter of ''hypoallergenic dogs''. Genetics don't work that way. At best, you might get 1/8-1/4 of the litter that would shed less and be 'less' allergenic. All in all, in the US, they've become a designer dog, bred for $$$ and not for any particularly good reason, and should not be recognized as a pure breed. For one, no-one has successfully created the consistent 4 generations that are needed of labradoodle x labradoodle crosses that it takes to create a standard, pedigree, and consistency from dog to dog. You see, there's a lot more that goes into becoming a recognized breed than just having a cute dog. I agree he is cute, and I've said it before I'll say it again- I love all dogs, but I am completely against this practice.

But... poodles were already low-shedding/low-dander, highly intelligent, water loving retrieving dogs. Why would you add a dog with the same basic traits that sheds like a beast TO that to try and get "hypoallergenic" dogs?

It's just a fad.

They ARE cute, and let's not forget that almost ALL breeds started by mixing established breeds together, but at that time no one was aware of the massive pet overpopulation problem.

Just my coupla cents.

Designer Dogs, UGH! My local puppy mill is just loving this, they are churning out labradoodles, puggles, golden doodles, giant and mini shnoodles, yorkipoos- the list goes on and on. RESPONSIBLE breeders won't crossbreed, so this is probably the best thing they've (puppy mills) had come around in years. Yikes! A girl at work just told me her sister had gotten one of this mills puggles at a petshop, she paid $650, oh and could I reccomend a good vet... The pup is already sick. I love dogs, but a mutt is a mutt. I now have two of Tori's litter at my house, they are 8 months and 2 (that I've herd about) are already on their 2nd home. I guess you could say they are "Great Shepherds" (Sombody let the Dane in heat out to play and the neighbors Shepherd came calling). I call them mixes. 2 homes have already called them "DISPOSIBLE". Yes it happens with pure breeds, but a responsible breeder usually has a clause that if you can't keep the dog it comes back to them, and a responsible breeder screens the homes! Big Ben has spent the last 6 1/2 months (given away at 6 weeks) on a chain attached to a choke collar "back in the woods". The wife couldn't stand it anymore and he became "free to a good home" again. There are enough mutts already, why in he** are we breeding more? Aren't the shelters full enough?

cute. but I don't condone the breeding of mutts that is of course unless they are trying to make it a new breed which to my knowledge none of these designer dogs are doing.

Cute pup... I got a neighbor who has a labradoodle, and that dang dog is scared and skittish of everything, jumping around like something is biting her in the behind... What's your pups behavior like??? I'm beginning to wonder if their breeding nutcases....

We have a labradoodle at the kennel where I work that is taking Zoloft... I think it's her owner that needs it, though. The dog's messed up because her owners are. The dog's very insecure and skittish and will bite but she's mostly just unsocialized and misunderstood. Also- they got the dog from a local puppy mill which probably has a lot to do with it. They were told when they adopted her that she wouldn't shed and her owner says "we were misled, we were robbed!" heh

I do not agree with many, many breeding practices, some of which I have read here, but that is my opinion and I know you came here because you love dogs and wanted to share in this forum. We are all here because we have the same fondness for our canine companions. Let us not forget that.

Jerry is adorable and I hope you have many wonderful and responsible years with him. If you have any questions as he grows, please do not hesitate to post them in the puppy forum.

First teach him sit, and make sure he understands it well. Then have everyone who meets him give him the sit command and only then does he get a pat on the head or a treat. I did this with my Lucy girl, in my avator, and she now runs to visitors, plops her rump down, and wiggles while she sits until she gets the pat. Then she will give a kiss if allowed and be off playing again. One of my pet peeves is a dog who jumps all over you and I told every single person who came over that she was not permitted to do that and in no way could it be encouraged.
