I recently got a new cat who unfortunately went through the shelter system and caught a cold. A couple of days after I took the cat to the vet for his runny nose, my dog started with a runny nose too.

She's always had a habit of blowing her nose in her water bowl, which she's doing now and then, and she's not off her feed. But, I guess she doesn't feel so great -- hard to say.

Should I let it run its course, or get her to the vet? Of course it's a holiday weekend! For further info, in the case of the cat they said it was just a virus, but since the cat's phlegm was yellow/green they gave me some antibiotics. The dog's nose is running clear, knock on wood, so far. Eyes are fine.

I've never had a dog with a cold before. I'm not expecting long-distance diagnosis, but any ideas of what can ease her troubles while it's not serious enough to go to the vet, or the tipping point (beyond yellow/green or blood in the mucus) to take her to the vet for a secondary sinus infection, would be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

OOOOOOO another smoothie!

I wouldn't worry. Just watch it. If it gets worse go to the vet. I would follow simular guidelines as to what they told you about the cat. Usually dogs don't catch cats upper resp. but ya never know. You could always call on tuesdya to be sure.

My vet has me giving my 6lb toy fox terrier children's benadryl syrup. He used to take chlorempheneramine for allerigies. I have no idea what the dose would be for a collie but the vet office might give you a dosage by weight to try at home for a couple of days to see if there is improvement.
