Old age??

Hi, my dog Sammi, is 9 or maybe older... I have only had her for 4 years..and we adopted her, she was running at large, so there is no information on her. Just recently she has been showing sighns of arthritis... so I took her to the vet and he gave her some meds..which seem to be working some days then seem to not be working other days... Yesterday she was laying down beside me while I was watching t.v. my dad came in the room to grab his wallet and it must have startled Sammi, because she started barking (I've only heard he bark 3 times in our 4 years in having her) and she looked like she was going to attack him. I was wondering what I should do, I know I'm going to watch her at all times to see if she does that to anyone again, but is she doing that just becouse she is getting old? or is there something I'm missing?

that's a pretty typical older dog thing. Just have people make more noise when they are by her while she is sleeping. I would worry too much about adults but I wouldn't have small kids around her unless she is awake and you are there.

Thank you Smooth, she is the first older dog I have had (the others died earlyer) And my dad's dog (that was 19 when he past away) never did any of this stuff. So I will be watching her more closely. I'm leaving to my cabin in a few, she normaly loves it up there, I guess I'll see what she does this time..:S
