Licorice was a black labrador. My mother bought him as a family pet when I was 13. My father was the "dog whisperer" of the family, but he was sick. As the oldest child I got the responcibility of training the puppy.
Though he was a member of the family, and we made a point not to say he was anyone's dog, he was my baby. He slept in my room, and cried if he was locked out. I did all of his trainnig, and there were some things (like "heel") that he would only do for me.
He was the sweetest dog I've ever met. He was a sad, old soul and very very calm. When I got sick he refused to leave my side, and had this enddearing way of sliding up onto the bed. First he'd lay his head on the bed, then his front paws, then with a single hop he'd get up on the bed and press up against me.
He passed away after I moved out of the house. He'd had a cough, and mom had an appointment with the vet in the morning. My sister slept on the couch (by accident) and Licorice sdid his bed trick to her on the couch (she'd never seen it before). After an hour, he slid back onto the floor and curled up nose-to-tail. That's where they found him in the morning. He was only 7 years old.
