I know Chows have a reputation for being one-person dogs, stubborn, and unpredictable. However, my wife and I have two Chow mixes that are absolutely wonderful dogs. The older one is a 12-year-old Chow/Golden Retriever. The younger is a 19-month-old Chow/German Shepherd. They're both pound dogs, and love everyone.

The younger dog still has a lot of puppy in her, can be stubborn at times, but responds very well to training and commands. She is also an excellent guard dog. A couple of weeks ago I was using the Weedeater in the back yard, and left the gate open. Jazzy wanted out while I was cutting weeds, and after about 10 minutes I remembered the open gate. Walking around the other side of the house I found her sitting about 20 feet from the gate, watching, just watching. She made no attempt to escape. When I closed the gate she she started running around the back yard looking for chew toys.

The older Chow/GR mix is about the sweetest old dog I've known. Despite physical problems (thyroid, cataracts, arthritic hips) she is always happy and quiet. She even plays with the younger dog a couple of times daily.

Any other Chow mix owners here?
